Statue of Pythagoras – A Timeless Symbol of Wisdom in Pythagoreio, Samos
🗿 Statue of Pythagoras in Pythagoreio, Samos
At the edge of the harbour of Pythagoreio, beside the Aegean Sea, stands one of the most distinctive modern landmarks of Samos: the Statue of Pythagoras. The monument is dedicated to the Samian philosopher whose legacy became closely associated with mathematics, philosophy and the Pythagorean tradition.
📍 Location
The statue is located on the eastern side of the harbour of Pythagoreio, on the pier extending out towards the sea.
It is easily reached on foot from the seafront area of the village, and the walk is short. From this point, visitors can enjoy open views of the harbour, Pythagoreio and the seascape of southeastern Samos.
🧠 Pythagoras of Samos
Pythagoras was born around 570 BC and spent the early years of his life on Samos. He later settled in Croton, in southern Italy, where he established a community of followers and students and became an influential figure in the philosophical and religious thought of his time.
The Pythagorean tradition placed particular importance on numbers, proportions, harmony and the study of the world through mathematical relationships.
The name of Pythagoras also became associated with the well-known Pythagorean Theorem in geometry, which still bears his name and remains one of the most widely recognised mathematical relationships in the world.
🎨 The Work of Nikos Ikaris
The monument was created in 1988 by the Greek sculptor Nikos Ikaris.
The composition combines the figure of Pythagoras with large geometric elements forming a right-angled triangle, directly referring to the theorem that bears his name.
Pythagoras is depicted standing with one arm raised, while the clean lines and strong geometry of the monument create a modern and symbolic representation of his personality and intellectual legacy.
Rather than attempting a historically realistic depiction of the ancient philosopher, the sculpture connects his figure with the mathematical symbol most closely associated with his name.
