Ampelos Waterfalls – Samos

💦 Waterfalls hidden in the forest of Ampelos

West of the mountain village of Ampelos, in northern Samos, lie the Ampelos Waterfalls, surrounded by dense and particularly cool forest on the slopes of Karvounis.

The water follows the natural course of the small stream known as Paliomylos or the Ampelos stream, flowing between rocks and thick vegetation and forming waterfalls at an elevation of approximately 300 metres.

The area is notable not only for the water itself, but also for the short hiking route required to reach it, through one of the greenest landscapes of northern Samos.

📍 Location

The waterfalls are located west of the village of Ampelos, relatively close to the settlement but deep enough within the vegetation to create the feeling of a secluded natural landscape.

The trail begins from the road before the parking area near the former Primary School of Ampelos.

From there, visitors continue on foot into the forest, following the path towards the stream and the waterfalls.

🥾 The trail to the waterfalls

The hiking route is approximately 1.5 kilometres long and usually takes around 30 minutes to reach the waterfalls, depending on walking pace and trail conditions.

The path passes through dense vegetation and includes narrow sections, rocky ground and places that may be wet or slippery.

It is not a demanding mountain route, but basic fitness and suitable footwear are recommended, especially when the ground is wet.

🌳 A different side of Samos

The landscape around the waterfalls is very different from the beaches and drier areas of the island.

Shade, humidity, mosses, ferns, broad-leaved trees and dense low vegetation create an almost enclosed woodland environment around the stream.

In many places the rocks are covered with moss and moisture-loving plants, while the water flows over uneven rock surfaces and forms smaller cascades before reaching the main waterfall.

💧 The Paliomylos stream

The waterfalls form along the course of the small Paliomylos stream, which crosses the Ampelos area and flows towards the northern coast.

Water has long been an important element of the natural and agricultural environment around the village, which developed among springs, vineyards and forested mountain slopes.

The flow varies considerably throughout the year and depends heavily on rainfall.

🌱 The best season to visit

Spring is the best time to experience the waterfalls.

After the winter rains, the water flow is usually stronger and the surrounding vegetation is at its most lush.

As summer progresses and rainfall decreases, the volume of water can become significantly lower. The appearance of the waterfalls therefore changes considerably with the seasons.

🪨 Rocks, water & natural pools

The water follows the irregular shape of the rock and descends over steep rocky surfaces.

Small natural hollows and places where water collects are formed along the stream and near the base of the falls.

The area has not been developed as an organised recreation site and retains its natural character, with rocks, roots and running water shaping the route.

🌿 The walk is part of the experience

At Ampelos Waterfalls, the hike is not simply a way of reaching the destination.

The walk through the forest, the cooler air as visitors approach the stream, the dense shade and the sound of flowing water are all important parts of the experience.

The destination is therefore particularly appealing to visitors who want to combine a short hike with discovering the natural side of Samos.

⚠️ Take care on wet ground

The area remains natural and the trail should not be treated like a paved urban walkway.

After rain, stones, roots and areas close to the water can become particularly slippery.

Closed shoes with good grip are recommended, together with careful movement and avoidance of steep or wet rock surfaces.

A visit to the waterfalls can easily be combined with a walk through Ampelos, one of the mountain villages of northern Samos.

The village is built on lush slopes surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and forest, and retains a strong connection with viticulture and the natural environment of Karvounis.

Its proximity to the waterfalls allows visitors to experience both the village and the surrounding forest landscape during the same excursion.

👀 What visitors will see

Ampelos Waterfalls are not a large organised tourist attraction, but a natural sight hidden within the forest.

Water flowing over rocks, dense vegetation and the short hike combine to reveal a different side of Samos.

The experience is at its best when the water flow is strong, especially during spring, when both the waterfall and the surrounding forest are at their most impressive.
