🍷 A journey through the viticultural and winemaking history of Samos

In the Malagari area, just outside Samos Town and close to the port, stands the Samos Wine Museum of the United Winemaking Agricultural Cooperative of Samos, a museum dedicated to the history of viticulture, winemaking and the island’s long-standing relationship with wine.

The museum does much more than display old tools and bottles. Through its collections and reconstructions, it presents the entire journey of Samian wine: from the mountain vineyards and dry-stone terraces to the harvest, grape pressing, winemaking, barrel making, ageing and the distribution of Samos wines to international markets.

📍 Location & building

The museum is located in Malagari, Samos Town, near the road junction leading toward the port of Malagari and next to the facilities of the United Winemaking Agricultural Cooperative of Samos.

It is housed in a characteristic 19th-century stone building. Before the establishment of the Cooperative, the building was used as a wine warehouse and was later converted into a barrel-making facility.

The building itself is therefore part of the story told by the museum. This is not simply a modern exhibition space filled with historic objects; it is a building that was genuinely connected with the storage and processing of Samian wine.

In 2005, the historic premises were converted into a museum and have since hosted an organised presentation of the viticultural and winemaking heritage of Samos.

🍇 Muscat of Samos

At the heart of the exhibition is White Muscat of Samos, the grape variety most closely associated with the island’s modern wine identity.

The vineyards of Samos are largely cultivated on mountain slopes and characteristic dry-stone terraces, creating a distinctive man-made landscape in which viticulture adapted to the island’s steep terrain.

The museum helps visitors understand that Samian wine is not simply the finished product in the bottle. Behind it lie the terraces, manual labour, grape harvests and a viticultural tradition that shaped both the landscape and the economic life of the island for centuries.

🧺 From the vineyard to the wine press

One of the most characteristic parts of the exhibition is the reconstruction of traditional vineyard cultivation on Samos.

The displays include dry-stone vineyard terraces, a traditional vineyard hut and a wine press, allowing visitors to follow the journey of the grape from the vineyard to the first stages of winemaking.

Particular emphasis is placed on the manual labour required — and still largely required — to cultivate vineyards on the steep slopes of Samos.

The museum therefore functions not only as a wine museum, but also as a museum of rural life and traditional craftsmanship.

🛠️ Tools & historic winemaking machinery

The exhibition halls contain tools and equipment used at different stages of wine production.

Old winemaking machinery, vineyard tools, containers, processing equipment and objects associated with daily work in wineries illustrate how production evolved before the introduction of modern industrial systems.

The craft of barrel making also holds a prominent place in the exhibition, directly reflecting the history of the building itself, which was once used as a cooperage.

🛢️ The enormous wooden wine tanks

Among the museum’s most impressive exhibits are the large wooden wine tanks dating from the previous century.

Some had a capacity of up to 80 tonnes, giving visitors an immediate sense of the scale at which wine production and storage had been organised on Samos.

The monumental wooden tanks, the stone building and the historic equipment create one of the museum’s most distinctive environments and evoke the period before modern stainless-steel winemaking tanks became standard.

📜 Photographs, archives & collectible bottles

The history of Samian wine is not presented through machinery alone.

The collections also include historic photographs, handwritten production records and collectible bottles, documenting different periods in the development of winemaking on Samos.

The archival material is particularly valuable because it moves the story beyond general history and into the realities of everyday production: quantities, records, workers and processes behind each vintage.

The historic bottles also illustrate the evolution of bottling, labelling, presentation and the commercial identity of Samian wines.

🤝 The creation of the Cooperative

An important section of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of the cooperative movement on Samos.

The present-day United Winemaking Agricultural Cooperative of Samos traces its origins to 1934, when it was founded following collective action by the island’s winegrowers.

Its purpose was to improve the organisation of production, protect growers’ income and preserve viticulture on the island.

The establishment of the Cooperative became a defining moment in the modern history of Samian wine, and the museum presents this development alongside the evolution of production and trade.

🏅 International awards of Samian wine

Part of the exhibition is dedicated to the international distinctions received by the wines of Samos.

The first award of the cooperative period dates back to 1937, while in the decades that followed Samian wines developed a significant presence in international competitions and exhibitions.

The museum presents representative examples of these distinctions, illustrating the journey of Samian wine from local agricultural production to the international wine market.

🍷 Wine tasting & discovering the wines of Samos

The museum experience can be completed with a tasting of Samian wines, giving visitors the opportunity to connect what they have seen in the exhibition with the finished product itself.

A shop also operates on site, offering wines from the Cooperative and local agri-food products, while the complex also includes a conference area.

Opening hours, wine-tasting availability and visiting conditions may vary depending on the period, so it is advisable to confirm them before visiting.

👀 What visitors will see

The Samos Wine Museum offers a comprehensive picture of the island’s viticultural and winemaking tradition.

The historic building, wooden wine tanks, old equipment, archives and collectible bottles present different periods of production and help visitors understand the major role wine played in the economic and social life of Samos.

The visit therefore connects the history of winemaking with the landscape, the work of winegrowers and the long tradition of Samian wine.
