🏖️ Livadaki Beach in Samos
A small organised sandy beach with exceptionally shallow turquoise waters, set inside a narrow and sheltered bay in northeastern Samos

Livadaki Beach is located on the northeastern side of Samos, approximately 12–13 kilometres by road from Samos Town. It is hidden inside a small and narrow natural bay, away from residential areas, within the wider coastal zone of Kotsikas and Agia Paraskevi.

The light-coloured sand, small pebbles and exceptionally shallow turquoise waters create one of the island’s most recognisable summer landscapes. Although Livadaki lies in a geographically secluded location and the final part of the route follows an unpaved road, it is an organised and highly popular beach, particularly during July and August.

📍 Location

Livadaki is situated northeast of Samos Town, along the coastline extending beyond the Kotsikas area and before the settlement of Agia Paraskevi. The beach cannot be seen from the main road, as it lies lower down inside a narrow bay surrounded by rocky hills and low Mediterranean vegetation.

The total driving distance from Samos Town is approximately 12–13 kilometres. The route initially follows a paved road towards Kotsikas and Agia Paraskevi and continues along an unpaved road for the final section.

🏝️ The Formation of the Bay

The beach is formed inside a long, narrow and relatively enclosed bay. The two sides of the cove extend towards the sea like natural rocky arms, reducing the shore’s direct exposure to the open sea.

The slopes surrounding Livadaki are low and rocky, covered with shrubs, small trees and vegetation typical of the island’s dry Mediterranean climate. The grey and light-coloured rocks of the hills create a striking contrast with the bright shades of the sea.

The small size of the shoreline strengthens the feeling of a hidden natural retreat. However, its limited area also means that it fills up easily during the peak tourist season and should not be considered a quiet or deserted beach.

🏖️ The Shore and Its Composition

The shore consists mainly of light-coloured sand, with small pebbles and stones in certain places, particularly near the entrance to the water and towards the edges of the bay. The distribution of sand and pebbles may change slightly due to winter waves and the natural movement of coastal material.

The available beach area is small and relatively narrow. During the summer season, a large part of it is occupied by the organised section with sun loungers, umbrellas and shaded areas, while some space remains near the waterline for visitors who prefer to sit directly on the sand.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The most important characteristic of Livadaki is its exceptionally shallow and clear water. The depth increases slowly and gradually, allowing swimmers to move a considerable distance away from the shore without immediately reaching deep water.

The seabed in the central part of the bay is mainly sandy. Near the two rocky sides, there are stones, rocks and more uneven areas where greater care is required when entering or leaving the sea.

The shallow depth allows the water to warm more quickly than at deeper and more exposed beaches. Its colours range from pale blue near the shore to turquoise and deeper blue towards the opening of the bay.

🌬️ Wind and Waves

The narrow shape of the bay provides relative protection from strong waves. On most summer days, the sea near the shore remains calm, especially when strong winds are not blowing directly towards the opening of the bay.

Its sheltered position does not mean that Livadaki is always completely unaffected by weather conditions. Strong winds can create waves near the entrance of the bay, while sea conditions may change during the course of the day.

The exceptionally shallow water near the shore generally reduces the intensity of the waves in the central area, but it does not eliminate the need for caution and continuous supervision of children.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Suitability for Families

Livadaki is particularly popular with families, mainly because of its sandy seabed, gradually increasing depth and the opportunity for children to play in exceptionally shallow water.

The limited size of the beach makes it easier to maintain visual contact with children. However, on busy days the area around the shoreline can become crowded. Shallow water should never replace continuous adult supervision.

Permanent lifeguard coverage throughout the summer season has not been confirmed. Children and people who are not confident swimmers should therefore not move far from the shore without supervision, even when the sea appears completely calm.

☂️ Organisation and Facilities

Livadaki is an organised beach. During the summer season, a beach bar operates near the shore, while umbrellas, sun loungers and different shaded areas are available.

Showers, toilets and changing rooms have been reported as part of the organised facilities. The operation and availability of individual amenities depend on the season and whether the beach facilities are open.

The beach bar offers coffee, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages and food options. There is no separate restaurant directly on the beach, so the relevant amenity should not be selected in Drupal as an independent restaurant category.

The organised operation, music and presence of visitors create a relaxed but lively summer atmosphere. Livadaki is not suitable for those seeking complete silence, particularly at weekends and during the peak tourist season.

🛶 Canoeing, Kayaking and Activities

The calm surface of the water and the narrow shape of the bay create suitable conditions for short canoe or kayak trips. The available equipment and conditions of use may vary from one season to another, so visitors should not assume that equipment is always provided or offered free of charge.

The beach has also been associated with activities such as beach volleyball and other organised summer events. Whether these take place depends on the programme of each season.

The rocky edges of the bay are interesting for exploration with a mask and snorkel, particularly when the sea is calm and underwater visibility is good. Swimmers should remain at a safe distance from steep or slippery rocks and should not attempt to leave the water at unsuitable locations.

🚗 Access by Car or Motorcycle

The main route begins in Samos Town and follows the road towards Kotsikas and Agia Paraskevi. Approximately 600 metres before the settlement of Agia Paraskevi, there is a junction leading towards Livadaki.

The final section of the route begins at this junction and extends for approximately 2.5–3 kilometres along an unpaved road. The road ends close to the organised beach facilities, and no long walk is required to reach the shore.

🛣️ The Unpaved Road

The unpaved road is generally passable by ordinary cars and motorcycles during the dry summer months, but low speed and careful driving are necessary. In certain places, there may be loose stones, erosion channels, dust and potholes.

The condition of an unpaved road can change after heavy rainfall, maintenance work or increased traffic. Visitors using a rental vehicle should check whether the rental company’s terms allow driving on unpaved roads.

The route is not suitable for fast driving. Additional caution is required when meeting vehicles travelling in the opposite direction and when crossing narrower or more damaged sections.

🅿️ Parking Area

Close to the beach, there is a parking area on natural or partially prepared ground. The distance from the parking area to the organised section of the beach is short, and no long walk is necessary.

During July, August and busy summer weekends, the parking area may fill up early. Arriving in the morning makes it easier both to find a parking space and to secure a suitable place on the beach.

♿ Accessibility

The possibility of driving close to the shore makes the beach easier to visit for people who find it difficult to walk long distances. However, the unpaved road, natural parking surface, sand and uneven ground mean that the beach cannot be described as fully accessible for people with disabilities.

Dedicated accessible parking spaces, a permanent mobility pathway leading to the water, an access ramp or an independent sea-entry system have not been confirmed. For this reason, the “Accessible for People with Disabilities” option should not be activated.

🌞 The Atmosphere of the Beach

The natural scenery initially creates the impression of an isolated and peaceful beach. In practice, however, Livadaki is one of the best-known summer destinations in northeastern Samos and attracts families, couples, groups of friends and visitors from Samos Town.

The atmosphere is usually quieter during the morning. As the day progresses, music, organised beach services and increased visitor numbers create a livelier character.

The “Secluded Beach” option may be used to describe its geographical location, but it should not be understood as a promise of silence or low visitor numbers.

🤿 What Is Worth Doing

Walk through the exceptionally shallow water and observe how the colours change above the sandy seabed.

Explore the narrow bay by canoe or kayak, provided that equipment is available and weather conditions are suitable.

Use a mask and snorkel near the rocky edges of the beach, while remaining at a safe distance from stones and passing watercraft.

Arrive early to enjoy the beach before visitor numbers increase and to find parking and shade more easily.

Observe the bay from a higher point along the route, without moving away from safe and stable areas of the road.

💡 Useful Advice

Drive slowly along the final unpaved section and do not rely on older descriptions of the road’s condition.

Prefer a morning arrival during the peak season, as both the shoreline and the parking area have limited capacity.

Check in advance whether the beach bar and organised facilities are operating, particularly at the beginning and end of the tourist season.

Do not assume that a lifeguard will be present, and continuously supervise young children.

Bring sunscreen, a hat and drinking water, even when planning to use the organised facilities.

Water shoes may be useful in areas with small pebbles and stones.
