Megali Lakka Beach on Samos – A secluded sandy shore with natural shade
Megali Lakka Beach lies on eastern Samos, south of Mikri Lakka and Mourtia. It is a separate beach rather than another name for Mikri Lakka. More demanding access, a narrow sandy shore and dense vegetation keep it away from large crowds.
🏖️ A narrow natural sandy beach
The beach is about 90 metres long and only a few metres wide. It is mainly sandy, with mixed natural material near the edges. Trees reach close to the water and provide generous natural shade.
🌊 Sheltered, calm sea
The shape of the bay usually protects Megali Lakka from northern swell. The water is clear and generally calm, with a gradual seabed. The remote setting requires responsible swimming and avoiding long solo swims offshore.
🤿 Snorkelling and marine life
Rocky edges and clear water offer good conditions for snorkelling, observing marine life and fishing. There are no organised activities, so bring your own equipment.
🥾 A walk of about twenty minutes
From Mourtia, continue for roughly 1.8 kilometres on a dirt road and then follow an 800-metre path. The walk takes about twenty minutes and can be demanding in hot weather. Closed shoes and returning before dusk are recommended.
⛵ Access by sea
The beach can also be reached by boat, and seasonal excursions may operate from Pythagorio. Timetables must be confirmed in advance.
☀️ Minimal facilities
Megali Lakka remains essentially a natural beach. Umbrellas or sunbeds may appear only with a specific excursion. Bring water, food, basic first aid and a bag for waste.
💡 Useful tip
Do not confuse it with Mikri Lakka: the route is longer and the shore is different. Check road and weather conditions, tell someone your route and never light a fire.
