🏡 Moni Profitou Iliou Karlovasion – The Peaceful Rural Settlement of Megali Lakka

Moni Profitou Iliou is an officially recognised settlement in northwestern Samos, approximately three kilometres southeast of Karlovasi. It extends across the Megali Lakka area, within a quiet agricultural landscape of olive groves, vineyards, low hills and scattered houses.

The settlement took its name from the historic Monastery of Prophet Elijah located in the area. It should not, however, be identified exclusively with the monastic complex. The official census includes the houses and permanent population of the wider residential zone surrounding the monastery.

Its short distance from Karlovasi, the road connection towards Kontaiika and the peaceful character of Megali Lakka have encouraged the development of permanent and holiday homes, without giving the area a densely built urban character.

📍 Location and natural environment

Moni Profitou Iliou lies south–southeast of Karlovasi, between the town and the inland route leading towards Kontaiika, Ydroussa and the surrounding rural settlements.

The central part of the area lies at an altitude of approximately 146–150 metres. Karlovasi is located about three kilometres to the northwest, while Kontaiika lies approximately four kilometres to the northeast in a straight line.

📝 The name of the settlement

The name “Moni Profitou Iliou” comes from the historic monastery that is the oldest and most important landmark in the area.

📜 Development of the area

Settlement in Megali Lakka was initially associated with agricultural use of the land and the presence of the monastery.

For many decades, the area mainly consisted of cultivated fields, farmhouses, storage buildings and small residences used by families from Karlovasi and nearby villages.

Moni Profitou Iliou was already recorded as a separate settlement in official 20th-century censuses. In the 1971 Census, it had 14 residents, while by 1991 the population had reached 54, indicating the gradual residential development of the area.

During the following decades, more permanent and holiday homes were built, mainly because of the short distance from Karlovasi and improved road access.

👥 Population and present-day character

According to the 2021 Population Census, the official settlement of Moni Profitou Iliou had 172 permanent residents.

This figure does not refer to monks or to those living inside the monastic complex. It includes the population of the wider census zone bearing the name of the monastery.

The considerable increase compared with earlier censuses is connected with the expansion of residential development into the countryside surrounding Karlovasi. Despite this growth, the area remains sparsely built and does not have a compact urban or traditional village centre.

Moni Profitou Iliou does not have the form of an organised village with a central square, continuous rows of houses and historic stone-paved lanes.

Its residential character mainly includes:

The area retains a strong rural identity. Olive groves dominate the landscape, while vineyards, fruit trees, small gardens and uncultivated plots are also found in several places.

Megali Lakka has traditionally been associated with viticulture and the agricultural production of the Karlovasi–Kontaiika area.

The cultivated land and open spaces interrupt the residential development and create the appearance of a semi-rural zone, despite the area’s proximity to the town.

🌿 Natural landscape and seasons

In spring, the area becomes particularly green, with wildflowers, grass and blossoming trees around the olive groves and roadsides.

During summer, the low vegetation becomes drier, while the olive trees, vineyards and gardens retain much of the green colour.

In autumn and winter, agricultural activity becomes more noticeable, particularly during the grape harvest, the maintenance of cultivated land and the olive harvest.

The area is more suitable for a peaceful drive and a short walk than for organised hiking.

Moni Profitou Iliou lies very close to the urban area of Karlovasi and functions largely as a peri-urban settlement.

Residents mainly depend on New Karlovasi for:

✅ Cafés and restaurants
✅ University and cultural activities

The short distance allows residents to combine the quiet of the countryside with direct access to the services of the town.

Access is provided by paved local roads from Karlovasi and from the road leading towards Kontaiika.

The main road network is suitable for a conventional car. Smaller branches leading to houses and cultivated fields may be narrower or continue as agricultural tracks.

Because the settlement is widely dispersed, GPS navigation is useful for locating a specific house, landmark or the monastic complex.

The best experience is a quiet drive from Karlovasi towards Megali Lakka and Kontaiika, with short stops at safe points for photography and observation of the rural landscape.

Moni Profitou Iliou lies approximately three kilometres southeast of central Karlovasi. Access is provided by the local paved road towards Megali Lakka and Kontaiika.

Travelling by car or motorcycle is the most practical option. A regular public bus service to all scattered parts of the settlement should not be assumed.
