Koumaradaioi of Samos
🏞️ Koumaradei, Samos
A village with deep roots, art in its hands and breathtaking views across southern Samos
Koumaradei is a small, traditional village in the interior of Samos, built on the southeastern slopes of Mount Karvounis, which is also known as Mount Ampelos. It lies at an altitude of approximately 330–340 metres, nestled within a natural fold of the mountainous landscape and surrounded by olive groves, low Mediterranean vegetation, strawberry trees and aromatic herbs.
The village’s location offers impressive views across southern and eastern Samos. To the east, visitors can see the Eptastadios Strait, Mykali, Pythagoreio, the plain of Chora and Ireon. Further south lie the Monastery of Megali Panagia and the village of Pagonadas, while Pyrgos is located to the west and Mavratzaioi to the north. From several points around the village, the view extends as far as the coast of Asia Minor.
📍 Administrative status and population
Koumaradei belongs administratively to the Municipality of Eastern Samos. In the past, the village was the seat of the independent Community of Koumaradei. In 1997, it was incorporated into the former Municipality of Pythagoreio, in 2010 into the unified Municipality of Samos and, since 2019, it has belonged to the Municipality of Eastern Samos.
According to the 2021 census, the Community of Koumaradei has 92 permanent residents. Despite the gradual decline in population, the village continues to maintain an active social and cultural life, particularly during the summer months and on the days of local religious celebrations.
🕰️ History and origin of the village’s name
According to local tradition, the village’s earlier name was “Five Houses”, because its original settlement consisted of only five residences. It is said that one of these old houses has survived and can still be seen today. The present name, “Koumaradei”, is believed to come from the numerous strawberry trees, known in Greek as koumaries, which grow throughout the wider area.
Local historical references also mention the existence, in ancient times, of a sanctuary dedicated to Artemis Karpophagos, or Fruit-bearing Artemis, near the location of the present-day village. This tradition connects the area with the ancient religious history of Samos, although there are currently no clearly visible or organised archaeological remains open to visitors.
🏡 The appearance and architecture of the village
Koumaradei has largely preserved the appearance of an authentic village in the interior of Samos. Old houses with tiled roofs, courtyards, stone walls, narrow streets and small neighbourhoods create a peaceful setting, far from the intense tourist activity of the island’s coastal resorts.
At the centre of the settlement lies the village square, shaded by a large, old plane tree. Nearby are the traditional stone fountains from which the residents once collected their water. For many generations, the square and the fountains served as central places for everyday meetings and social life.
The former primary school has been converted into a cultural centre and hosts community activities and events. A recreational park has also been created in the neighbouring area, including a children’s playground and an outdoor space suitable for gatherings and cultural events.
🏺 Pottery, weaving and local craftsmanship
Koumaradei has closely connected its name with the art of pottery and the production of handmade clay objects. The village’s ceramic tradition has been preserved through workshops and shops displaying both practical and decorative pottery inspired by the traditional shapes, colours and motifs of Samos.
At the same time, the village became known for its traditional woven fabrics and for products made from herbs and aromatic plants. Thyme, oregano, sage and other plants of the Samian countryside are collected or cultivated in the surrounding area, while local activities are also associated with the production of organic herbs and essential oils.
⛪ The Church of Agios Panteleimon
The main church of the village is the Church of Agios Panteleimon, which serves as an important religious and social landmark for the local community. The church has a large outdoor courtyard where residents and visitors gather during religious celebrations and village events.
Within and around the village, there are also several smaller chapels dedicated to:
⛪ Agios Georgios
⛪ Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni, as well as Agia Aikaterini
⛪ Agios Rafael
These small places of worship form an important part of the village’s religious tradition and historical identity.
🏛️ The Holy Monastery of Megali Panagia
Approximately two kilometres southeast of Koumaradei stands the historic Holy Monastery of Megali Panagia, also known as the Monastery of the “Five Houses”. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and is one of the most important monastic complexes on Samos.
The monastery was founded in 1586 by the monks Neilos and Dionysios, who had previously lived as monks on Mount Latros in Asia Minor, near the ancient city of Miletus. The main church of the monastery was constructed in 1593 in the Byzantine style and follows the architectural form of a complex cross-in-square Athonite church.
The interior of the church was decorated with frescoes in 1596. Of particular artistic importance are the carved and gilded wooden iconostasis dating from 1740, the bishop’s throne, the pulpit and the wooden lecterns. The monastery became closely connected with the religious, educational and revolutionary history of Samos and served as an important landmark during the period of Ottoman rule and the Greek Revolution of 1821.
Megali Panagia celebrates its main feast on 23 August, during the leave-taking of the Feast of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, attracting worshippers from all over Samos.
The wider area also includes the ascetic cell dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and several small chapels dedicated to Agios Paisios, the Transfiguration of the Saviour, Agios Ioannis and Agia Kyriaki.
🌿 Land, olive groves and aromatic plants
The countryside surrounding Koumaradei is mainly mountainous and is covered to a large extent by olive groves. Olive cultivation and the production of olive oil have traditionally formed an essential part of the local economy and the everyday life of the village’s residents.
The natural vegetation includes strawberry trees, thyme, oregano, sage and other plants characteristic of the Mediterranean ecosystem. The village’s connection with herbs is not merely part of its historical tradition, but remains an active part of modern local production.
🎭 Celebrations and cultural life
The village square, the cultural centre and the courtyard of the Church of Agios Panteleimon are the main gathering places for the local community. During the summer months, the village becomes livelier, with religious celebrations, cultural gatherings and traditional festivals taking place.
The most important local celebrations are:
🔔 7 July – Feast of Agia Kyriaki
🔔 27 July – Feast of Agios Panteleimon
These celebrations are traditionally accompanied by music, dancing, local food and the participation of residents and visitors from the surrounding areas.
