Isomata of Marathokampos
🏡 Isomata Marathokampou, Samos – The Small Rural Settlement on the Lower Foothills of Mount Kerkis
Isomata is a very small and sparsely developed rural settlement in southwestern Samos. It lies between Kampos Marathokampou and Limnionas, in a low transitional zone between the slopes of Mount Kerkis and the island’s southern coastline.
The settlement does not have the form of a compact Samian village with a central square, closely built houses, a parish church and a historic network of stone-paved lanes. It consists mainly of scattered homes, agricultural buildings, cultivated plots and undeveloped land connected by small local roads.
Its peaceful character, proximity to the beaches of southwestern Samos and strong visual connection with Mount Kerkis make Isomata an interesting place for a short countryside drive rather than an independent tourism destination with organised attractions.
📍 Location and natural environment
Isomata lies southwest of the mountain village of Marathokampos, between Kampos Marathokampou and Limnionas. Marathokampos is approximately 3.5 kilometres northeast in a straight line, while the road distance is longer and is estimated at around 9 kilometres. Limnionas lies approximately 2.5 kilometres southwest.
The settlement is built at an altitude of approximately 30–33 metres and not on the higher slopes of the mountain. Mount Kerkis lies around four kilometres to the northwest and dominates the wider landscape.
The area is characterised by olive groves, low Mediterranean vegetation, small cultivated plots and open agricultural land. The terrain is gentler than the steep slopes of Kerkis, although it does not form a completely flat plain.
🏛️ Administrative identity
Isomata belongs to the Municipal Community of Marathokampos, within the Municipal Unit of Marathokampos and the Municipality of Western Samos. The municipality belongs to the Regional Unit of Samos in the North Aegean Region.
The Municipal Community of Marathokampos officially includes the following settlements:
✅ Marathokampos
✅ Agia Kyriaki
✅ Velanidia
✅ Isomata
✅ Kampos
✅ Limnionas
✅ Ormos Marathokampou
✅ Palaiochori
✅ Sevastaika
According to the final results of the 2021 Population Census, the Municipal Community of Marathokampos has a total of 1,681 permanent residents.
📜 Official recognition and administrative development
Isomata was officially recognised as a separate settlement on 17 March 1991 and was incorporated into the former Community of Marathokampos.
In 1997, following the implementation of the Kapodistrias administrative reform, it became part of the Municipality of Marathokampos. In 2010, it was incorporated into the unified Municipality of Samos, and since 2019 it has belonged to the Municipality of Western Samos.
Its official recognition in 1991 does not necessarily mean that there were no homes or agricultural buildings in the area before that date. It indicates that the small residential cluster was administratively recorded as an independent settlement at that time.
📝 The name Isomata
The name “Isomata” appears to be connected with the relatively smoother and lower sections of the terrain, in comparison with the steep slopes of Mount Kerkis and the inclined landscape around Marathokampos.
In Samian and wider Greek place-name usage, the word “isomata” refers to areas where the ground becomes more even or has gentler gradients.
The area is not, however, a large continuous plain. It consists of smaller relatively level sections, low slopes and agricultural plots.
👥 Population and present-day character
According to the 2021 Population Census, Isomata had 14 permanent residents. Six residents were recorded in 2011, 17 in 2001 and seven in 1991.
These figures confirm the settlement’s very small population. There is no dense residential development or organised commercial centre, while the houses are scattered across a relatively wide area.
The presence of residents and seasonal occupants may increase during summer, particularly because the area lies close to Kampos Marathokampou and the beaches of the southwestern coast.
🏘️ Settlement form and planning character
Isomata is not an organised traditional village. In the approved General Urban Plan for the area, it is described as an informal residential development area, unlike the compact historic and officially defined settlements of the Municipal Unit of Marathokampos.
Its present form mainly includes:
✅ Scattered detached houses
✅ Small holiday and seasonal homes
✅ Agricultural buildings and storage facilities
✅ Olive groves and cultivated plots
✅ Undeveloped land between the houses
✅ Local and agricultural roads
✅ Low-rise development without large building complexes
There is no identifiable unified historic centre or specific central point around which the settlement developed.
🫒 Rural character
The development of the area is mainly associated with the agricultural use of the land by residents of Marathokampos and nearby settlements.
Olive groves are the most visible feature of the rural landscape. Small gardens, uncultivated plots, low vegetation and agricultural facilities are found among them.
Agricultural activity has not created an organised agritourism destination. It nevertheless shapes the appearance of the area and explains the scattered distribution of homes and agricultural buildings.
🌿 Vegetation and seasonal scenery
During spring, Isomata becomes greener, with wildflowers and grass appearing along roadsides and across uncultivated plots.
In summer, the low vegetation dries and the landscape develops the characteristic golden shades of southwestern Samos. Olive groves retain the main green presence within the drier surroundings.
During autumn and winter, agricultural activity related to the maintenance of the olive groves and the olive harvest becomes more noticeable.
🌄 The connection with Mount Kerkis
The mountainous mass of Kerkis lies northwest of Isomata and is the dominant natural feature of the wider area. Its summit and limestone slopes are visible from several open points along the local road network.
Isomata is not, however, a principal starting point for the best-known hiking routes towards the higher peaks of the mountain.
Organised ascents or visits to caves, monasteries and remote religious monuments on Kerkis require different access routes, appropriate equipment and reliable information.
🌊 The connection with the coastline
Although Isomata is not directly a coastal settlement, it lies a short distance from the southern coast of Samos.
Its location provides easy road access to:
✅ The western section of Kampos Marathokampou
✅ Votsalakia Beach
✅ Limnionas
✅ Agia Kyriaki
✅ Smaller beaches and bays of southwestern Samos
The beaches are reached by road. There is no continuous seafront forming part of the settlement itself.
🥾 Walking and exploration
Isomata does not have organised or marked hiking trails. The small roads and agricultural branches are nevertheless suitable for short, peaceful walks through the rural landscape.
Visitors should take care because:
✅ Several roads lead to private properties
✅ Agricultural branches are not always signposted
✅ Some sections may be narrow or unpaved
✅ Natural shade is limited during summer
✅ There are no organised drinking-water points
Morning and late-afternoon hours are more suitable for walking, particularly from June to September.
🛏️ Facilities and services
The very small population and dispersed development mean that Isomata does not have a concentrated shopping area or complete everyday services.
For food shops, pharmacies, restaurants, cafés, tourism accommodation and other services, visitors are mainly served by:
✅ Kampos Marathokampou
✅ The mountain village of Marathokampos
✅ Limnionas
✅ Karlovasi for a wider range of public and commercial services
Kampos Marathokampou is the nearest organised tourism and commercial centre.
🌿 What to see
The area does not contain major monuments or organised attractions. During a short drive or walk, it is worth noticing:
✅ The peaceful rural landscape
✅ The olive groves and low cultivated areas
✅ The scattered houses and agricultural buildings
✅ The views towards the slopes of Mount Kerkis
✅ The small local roads leading towards the coast
✅ The open landscape towards the southern Aegean Sea
✅ Nearby Kampos Marathokampou
✅ Limnionas and the surrounding beaches
🚶 Visitor experience
A visit to Isomata does not follow the pattern of a conventional village tour. There is no central square, organised historic walk or specific sequence of attractions.
The best approach is a short and peaceful drive through the area, with stops at safe points offering views towards Mount Kerkis, the olive groves and the southern coastline.
The visit can be combined with:
✅ Swimming at Kampos Marathokampou
✅ A visit to Limnionas
✅ Exploring the traditional village of Marathokampos
✅ A drive towards Agia Kyriaki
✅ A meal or coffee at one of the coastal settlements
Around 20–30 minutes is sufficient for a brief introduction to Isomata. With a walk and a visit to a nearby beach, the excursion can last several hours.
