Tsampou Beach | The Wild Beauty of Samos
๐๏ธ Tsabou Beach in Samos
An impressive organised pebbled beach on the northern coast, with deep cool waters, steep rocky edges and frequent waves
Tsabou Beach is located on the northern coast of Samos, between Avlakia and Agios Konstantinos, in an open bay framed by rocky formations and green slopes.
It is one of the most recognisable beaches in the northern part of the island, thanks to its large pale-coloured pebbles, intense blue and turquoise waters and the dramatic landscape at both ends of the bay.
Tsabou has an organised section with umbrellas, sun loungers and seasonal service, as well as free areas for visitors who prefer to use their own towel and equipment.
๐ Location
Tsabou is located approximately 14.8โ15 kilometres northwest of Samos Town and around 4.8 kilometres west of Kokkari.
Following the main route from Samos Town towards Karlovasi, the beach is reached after Kokkari, Lemonakia, Tsamadou and Avlakia, and before Agios Konstantinos.
The beach belongs to the coastal area of Kampos Vourlioton. Administratively, it belongs to the Community of Vourliotes, the Municipal Unit of Vathy and the Municipality of East Samos.
๐๏ธ A Bay between Rocky Headlands
The beach is formed between two rocky headlands that clearly define the bay and create its characteristic natural setting.
The rocks provide an impressive landscape and interesting areas to explore, but they do not fully protect the shore from northern winds. The bay remains open towards the northern Aegean and is strongly affected by the seasonal meltemi.
Behind the shore are low vegetation, trees, open areas and seasonal facilities serving visitors.
๐ Length and Width of the Shore
The main Tsabou Beach is approximately 250 metres long and around 20 metres wide on average.
The available area is sufficient for organised rows of sun loungers and free sections, although it is not an exceptionally wide beach.
The actual width may vary along the shore and according to wave conditions, as the sea moves the pebbles and reshapes the waterline.
๐๏ธ The Shore and Pebbles
The shore consists mainly of large and medium-sized rounded pebbles, with smaller gravel and stones in certain areas.
Many of the pebbles are pale grey or almost white and create a striking contrast with the blue water, particularly when wet and reflecting the sunlight.
Tsabou is not a sandy beach. Walking over the large pebbles and entering the sea may be difficult for children, elderly visitors and people with limited balance.
Water shoes are particularly useful both on the shore and across the pebbled seabed.
๐ The Water and Seabed
The waters are usually extremely clean and transparent, with intense blue, deep-blue and turquoise shades.
The seabed consists mainly of pebbles and stones. The depth increases relatively quickly, and the beach does not have an extensive shallow zone.
The slope becomes noticeable within the first few metres at several points, making Tsabou more suitable for visitors who feel comfortable in deeper water.
When the sea is calm, the clarity allows a clear view of the seabed and creates excellent swimming conditions.
๐ฌ๏ธ Northern Wind and Waves
Tsabou is open towards the north and is directly affected by northern winds and the meltemi.
On calm days or when the wind is light, the sea can be exceptionally peaceful and transparent. When the northern wind strengthens, however, large waves develop and break over the pebbles.
The waves may make leaving the sea more difficult than entering it, because the water moves the pebbles and affects balance.
The wind forecast should be checked before visiting, especially by families and less experienced swimmers.
๐ก๏ธ Water Temperature
The waters of Tsabou are usually cool, as is common at several open beaches along the northern coast of Samos.
Its open exposure to the northern Aegean, the relatively rapid increase in depth and the continuous movement of the water contribute to the cool sensation.
During hot summer days, the temperature is particularly refreshing, while early and late in the summer season the water may feel noticeably colder.
โ๏ธ Organisation and Sun Loungers
The main Tsabou Beach is organised across a significant section.
During the summer season, umbrellas and sun loungers are arranged in rows in front of the seasonal visitor facilities.
Free sections also remain available for visitors using their own towel, chair or umbrella.
Prices, conditions of use and the size of the organised section may vary according to the establishment and summer season.
๐ฝ๏ธ Food, Coffee and Drinks
Seasonal dining and refreshment facilities operate on the beach and directly behind the shore, offering food, coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.
Visitors can remain for several hours and combine swimming with a meal or drink without having to return to the main road.
Although service is available, bringing drinking water is still useful, particularly for visitors choosing a free section or arriving outside the main summer season.
๐ฟ Showers, Changing Rooms and Toilets
Showers, changing rooms and toilets are available in the organised section.
These facilities are connected with the seasonal services of the main beach and may not operate outside the tourist season.
Tsabou should not be confused with Small Tsabou, where similar organised facilities are not available.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Suitability for Families
Tsabou can be enjoyable for families when the sea is calm and the children are older or confident swimmers.
It is not, however, a consistently easy choice for families with babies or very young children. The large pebbles, rapid increase in depth and strong waves on certain days require constant supervision.
Families should choose a day with light northern winds and remain near an entry point where access to the water is smoother.
Permanent lifeguard coverage has not been confirmed.
๐ Swimming Safety
On days with waves, children and inexperienced swimmers are safer staying out of the sea.
Particular care is needed where the waves break, because the pebbles move underfoot and may cause loss of balance.
Swimmers should avoid areas with strong returning water and should not move too far from the shore when northern winds are blowing.
The presence of organised facilities does not mean that a lifeguard is on duty every day.
๐ณ Natural Shade
Trees and vegetation behind the shore provide limited natural shade at certain points.
Most of the beach remains exposed to the sun, especially during the middle of the day.
Organised umbrellas provide the most reliable shade. In the free areas, visitors can use a personal umbrella, provided it is secured carefully among the pebbles.
๐ฟ Natural Landscape
Tsabou is surrounded by rocky slopes, low Mediterranean vegetation and green areas descending towards the shore.
The steep rocks at both ends, pale-coloured pebbles and deep blue water create one of the most characteristic landscapes of northern Samos.
Despite the seasonal organisation, the bay retains a strong natural character and does not resemble a densely developed seaside resort.
๐ฟ Seaweed and Natural Materials
Northern winds and sea currents may occasionally bring seaweed, pieces of wood or other natural materials onto the shore.
Their amount depends on weather conditions and may vary significantly from one day to another.
The presence of natural marine materials does not by itself mean that the water is unsuitable for swimming.
๐คฟ Swimming and Snorkelling
The exceptional clarity of the water and the pebbled seabed create good conditions for snorkelling when the sea is calm.
The rocky edges of the bay and areas with larger stones are the most interesting for observing small fish and underwater formations.
On the western side, there are small rocky recesses and coves that can be explored only in calm conditions and by experienced swimmers.
Snorkelling should be avoided when there are strong waves or powerful water movement close to the rocks.
๐ชจ Rocks and Small Marine Recesses
The rocky headlands on both sides of the bay are an important part of the landscape.
Small recesses and passages are formed at certain points and attract visitors interested in swimming and exploration.
They can be approached safely only when the sea is calm. When waves are present, movement close to the rocks can become dangerous because of the force of the water and the difficulty of leaving the sea.
๐ Sea Activities
There is no confirmed organised water-sports centre or permanent equipment-rental service.
The main activities are swimming, snorkelling and relaxing on the shore.
Using a SUP board or kayak requires experience and careful checking of the wind, as conditions on the northern coast may change and make returning to the shore difficult.
๐ Road Access
Access is provided from the main SamosโKarlovasi road through a paved descending road leading towards the bay.
The route offers impressive views of the beach and sea, particularly from the higher points before the final descent.
The road reaches close to the shore, and no hiking or long path is required. The previous reference to a 10โ15-minute walk through nature does not apply to the main Tsabou Beach.
๐ ฟ๏ธ Parking
A substantial parking area is available very close to the beach and the organised facilities.
Parking is provided in prepared or open areas behind the shore, without requiring a long walk.
During peak days in July and August, the nearest spaces may fill quickly. Vehicles should be parked without obstructing access, businesses or the movement of other cars.
๐ Access by Bus
The main SamosโKarlovasi bus route follows the national road above the wider area.
The exact location of the stop, the walking distance to the beach and the frequency of services may vary according to the summer timetable.
Visitors planning to use the bus should confirm the current schedule and the most suitable drop-off point before travelling.
โฟ Accessibility
Access by car to the area behind the beach is relatively easy.
Movement across the shore itself is more difficult because of the large and unstable pebbles, while the entrance to the sea does not include an extensive shallow and level section.
A dedicated stable pathway, ramp or independent sea-access system has not been confirmed.
๐๏ธ The Avlakia and Kampos Vourlioton Area
Tsabou is located close to Avlakia and the coastal area of Kampos Vourlioton.
The surroundings are characterised by limited development, small accommodation establishments, cultivated land and natural vegetation below the slopes of Mount Ampelos.
The beachโs location allows it to be combined easily with other beaches and villages along the northern coast of Samos.
๐๏ธ The Separate Small Tsabou Beach
A few metres east of the main beach lies Small Tsabou, a separate shore approximately 30 metres long and around 20 metres wide on average.
Small Tsabou does not have organised umbrellas, restaurants or other permanent facilities and retains a more natural character.
Naturism is commonly reported there. This should not be presented as a characteristic of the main organised Tsabou Beach.
๐ Afternoon Atmosphere
The afternoon light highlights the pale pebbles, rocky formations and blue shades of the bay.
When the sea remains calm, the afternoon hours are suitable for relaxing, dining and remaining on the shore.
The beach faces north and does not always provide a direct view of the sun setting into the sea, but the western light creates an attractive atmosphere across the bay.
๐ถ Combining the Visit with Nearby Places
A visit can be combined with Avlakia and Small Tsabou to the east.
Agios Konstantinos lies to the west and is a coastal settlement with options for walking, coffee and dining.
Farther east are Tsamadou, Lemonakia and Kokkari, while Vourliotes and Manolates can be visited inland.
๐คฟ What Is Worth Doing
Swim when the northern wind is light and the sea is calm.
Use water shoes for easier movement over the large pebbles.
Explore the rocky edges with a mask only under safe sea conditions.
Choose the organised section for a sun lounger, shade and basic facilities.
Enjoy coffee, food or a drink close to the shore.
Photograph the bay from the descending road before reaching the beach.
Combine the visit with Avlakia, Agios Konstantinos or Vourliotes.
๐ก Useful Advice
