๐Ÿ–๏ธ Psili Ammos Mykali Beach in Samos
One of the best-known sandy beaches in Samos, with exceptionally shallow water, organised facilities and open views towards the coast of Asia Minor

Psili Ammos Beach is located on the southeastern side of Samos, in front of the coastal settlement of the same name and east of the long Mykali Beach.

It is one of the few beaches on the island with genuinely fine sand and one of the most popular choices for families with young children. The very gentle slope of the seabed, the usually calm water and the easy road access create particularly friendly conditions for relaxed swimming.

Organised sections with umbrellas and sun loungers operate along the shore, together with restaurants, cafรฉs and a beach bar. Free areas are also available for visitors who prefer to use their own towels or umbrellas.

๐Ÿ“ Location

Psili Ammos is located in southeastern Samos, approximately 9โ€“11 kilometres southeast of Samos Town and around 10 kilometres east of Pythagorio.

The route from Samos Town passes through the Mykali area and the Alyki wetland, while access from Pythagorio follows the road network along the southeastern coast.

The beach and the coastal settlement belong to the Community of Paleokastro, the Municipal Unit of Vathy and the Municipality of East Samos.

๐Ÿ๏ธ A Small Sandy Bay

The beach lies within an open but relatively sheltered bay on the southeastern coast.

Its position opposite Asia Minor and the protection offered by the surrounding landscape significantly reduce wave action, particularly when northern winds affect the opposite side of the island.

The sea usually remains calm, although small waves or light surface disturbance may occur when local weather conditions change.

๐Ÿ“ Length and Width of the Shore

Psili Ammos Beach is approximately 240 metres long and has an average width of around 13 metres.

It is a relatively small beach and may fill quickly during the peak tourist season.

The available width varies along the coastline, while rows of sun loungers occupy a significant part of the sand in some organised sections.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ The Sand and Shore

Psili Ammos fully deserves its name, as the shore is covered mainly with fine and relatively soft sand.

Small shells, very fine gravel or natural material carried by the sea may appear close to the waterline without changing the beachโ€™s mainly sandy character.

The sand is suitable for playing, building sandcastles and relaxing comfortably on a towel. This is a relatively uncommon feature in Samos, where pebbled beaches are more widespread.

๐ŸŒŠ The Water and Seabed

The water is usually clean and transparent, with pale blue-green and turquoise shades.

The seabed is mainly sandy and has an exceptionally gentle slope. The depth increases very gradually, and swimmers can walk a considerable distance from the shore before reaching deeper water.

These conditions are ideal for relaxed walking in the sea, childrenโ€™s play and visitors who do not feel comfortable in water that becomes deep abruptly.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Water Temperature

Because of the shallow water in the first sections of the bay, the sea warms relatively easily during the summer season.

During the warmest months, the water is usually pleasant and often noticeably warmer than the deeper waters found along the northern coast of Samos.

The actual temperature varies according to the season, time of day, wind and water circulation.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Wind and Wave Conditions

Psili Ammos is fairly protected from northern winds and usually does not experience the strong wave action found along the northern coast of Samos.

Even when it is windy, the surface may show only small waves or light disturbance. Easterly or southeasterly winds can have a greater effect on the bay.

Actual sea conditions should always be assessed on arrival, particularly when young children are present.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Suitability for Families

Psili Ammos is one of the most suitable beaches in Samos for families with children.

The fine sand, extremely gradual increase in depth, usually calm water, easy access and immediate availability of restaurants create practical conditions for spending many hours by the sea.

Children must remain under constant supervision, even when the water is very shallow. The extensive shallow zone creates a feeling of safety, but wind, sea currents and the possible movement of small boats still require attention.

๐Ÿ›Ÿ Swimming Safety

Swimming close to the shore is usually easy because of the shallow depth and calm surface.

Swimmers should remain within the marked bathing zone and avoid moving too far from the shore, even when the water still appears shallow.

Stronger sea movement and currents may occur beyond the main swimming area.

Children, elderly visitors and less experienced swimmers should remain close to the shore and under continuous supervision.

Permanent lifeguard coverage throughout the entire summer season has not been confirmed.

โ˜‚๏ธ Organisation and Sun Loungers

A significant part of the beach is organised with umbrellas and sun loungers.

The organised zones are served by the businesses operating beside the shore. Charges and conditions of use may differ according to the business and the summer season.

Free sections remain available, mainly towards the ends of the beach, where visitors can use their own towels, chairs or umbrellas.

Morning arrival is preferable during July and August because both the beach and the best positions fill quickly.

๐Ÿน Beach Bar and Cafรฉs

Seasonal cafรฉs and an organised beach bar operate on the beach, offering coffee, soft drinks, juices, snacks and alcoholic beverages.

Their presence allows visitors to remain on the shore for several hours without needing to travel elsewhere.

Opening times, operating periods and service to the sun loungers may vary according to the business and tourist season.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Restaurants and Food

Restaurants and tavernas operate along the beach and within the small settlement, very close to the water.

Visitors can combine swimming with food, coffee or drinks while enjoying views across the bay and towards the coast of Asia Minor.

Outside the main tourist season, fewer businesses may be open and their operating hours may be more limited.

๐Ÿšฟ Showers, Changing Rooms and Toilets

Showers, changing rooms and toilets are available in the organised sections.

These facilities are mainly connected with the organised beach areas and neighbouring businesses and are not necessarily available at every point along the shore.

Their operation is primarily seasonal and may vary according to the section and business.

๐ŸŒณ Natural Shade

Tamarisk trees and other trees grow along and behind certain sections of the beach.

The natural shade is useful but does not cover the entire shore evenly. The areas beneath the trees are limited and fill quickly during the peak season.

Organised umbrellas provide the most reliable sun protection, while personal umbrellas may be used in the free sections.

๐ŸŒฟ Natural Surroundings

The small coastal settlement of Psili Ammos lies directly behind the beach, with houses, accommodation, restaurants and seasonal businesses.

Low hills with olive trees, shrubs and Mediterranean vegetation surround the bay.

The area is not secluded, but it retains a small scale and a direct connection between the beach, settlement and sea.

๐Ÿฆ Alyki and the Protected Wetland

Shortly before the settlement lies the Alyki wetland of Psili Ammos, an important seasonal wetland within a protected natural area.

The former salt works stopped operating during the 20th century and gradually developed into an important refuge for migratory and aquatic birds.

Flamingos, ducks, kingfishers and other species may be observed during the winter and spring months.

Visitors should keep their distance, avoid disturbing the birds and refrain from entering sensitive parts of the wetland on foot or by vehicle.

๐ŸŒฟ Seaweed and Natural Materials

Seaweed, leaves, small pieces of wood or other natural materials carried by wind and currents may occasionally gather inside this shallow and relatively sheltered bay.

Their quantity can vary from one day to another, particularly after a change in weather conditions.

The occasional presence of natural material does not by itself indicate poor water quality.

๐Ÿคฟ Swimming and Snorkelling

The beach is better suited to relaxed swimming, playing and walking through the shallow water than to demanding snorkelling.

The sandy seabed in the central section does not offer the same variety as rocky beaches.

The ends of the bay, where stones, small fish and natural formations can be found, provide greater interest for visitors using a mask and snorkel.

Swimmers should remain close to the shore and within the marked bathing zone.

๐Ÿ„ Sea Activities

Seasonal small-boat rental services or boat excursions may operate in the area.

There is no permanent organised water-sports centre offering activities such as water skiing, jet skiing or windsurfing.

The main activities remain swimming, playing in the sand, sunbathing and relaxing in the shallow water.

๐ŸŒ… View towards Asia Minor

The coast of Asia Minor and Mount Mycale can be seen clearly from Psili Ammos.

The short distance across the sea creates the impression that the opposite land is exceptionally close.

The view is particularly clear on days with good visibility and is one of the beachโ€™s most distinctive features.

๐Ÿ๏ธ Vareloudi Islet

The small islet of Vareloudi lies within or close to the entrance of the bay.

The islet is a characteristic feature of the seascape and can be seen from the beach together with the opposite coast of Asia Minor.

Swimming to the islet requires experience, good physical condition and careful assessment of the currents, distance and possible boat movement.

๐Ÿš— Road Access

Psili Ammos is reached by a paved local road.

The road ends within the settlement and very close to the beach, with no hiking trail, long walk or descending path required.

Access by car, motorcycle or taxi is easy, although the final road and spaces within the settlement may become busy during the peak season.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Parking

An organised paid parking area operates in the area, while a limited number of additional spaces may be found along the road.

The closest spaces fill quickly during July and August, making morning arrival preferable.

Parking charges may change according to the season.

Vehicles must be parked without blocking homes, businesses, entrances or local traffic.

๐ŸšŒ Access by Bus

Public transport services to the area vary by season and may not operate every day.

Visitors wishing to use the bus should check the current KTEL Samos timetable before departure.

A car, motorcycle or taxi remains the most dependable way to reach the beach.

โ™ฟ Accessibility

The road reaches very close to the beach, and there are no long paths or stairways, making the general approach relatively easy.

The shore itself is sandy, and movement with a wheelchair or walking aids may be difficult without a suitable pathway.

A dedicated accessible walkway, ramp or independent sea-access system has not been confirmed.

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ The Settlement of Psili Ammos

Psili Ammos is a small coastal settlement situated directly behind the beach.

It has accommodation, restaurants, cafรฉs and seasonal services for beach visitors.

The close connection between the settlement and the shore provides easy access to food and accommodation, but also means that the area does not offer seclusion or reliable privacy.

๐ŸŒ… Afternoon Atmosphere

During the afternoon, visitor numbers often decrease and the beach takes on a calmer atmosphere.

The softer light highlights the shallow turquoise water and the opposite coastline, while the temperature of the sand becomes more comfortable.

Its eastern and southeastern orientation does not provide a direct view of the sun setting into the sea, but the afternoon light remains particularly attractive across the bay.

๐Ÿšถ Combining the Visit with Nearby Places

The visit can easily be combined with the long Mykali Beach, located farther west.

The protected Alyki wetland lies along the road towards Psili Ammos, while Kerveli, Poseidonio, Klima and Paleokastro can be included in a wider route through southeastern Samos.

Pythagorio is approximately 10 kilometres away and can be included as a separate stop for walking, dining and visiting the areaโ€™s historic attractions.

๐Ÿคฟ What Is Worth Doing

Swim and walk through the exceptionally shallow water in the central section.

Let children play in the sand and sea under constant supervision.

Use the organised sections for an umbrella, sun lounger and basic facilities.

Enjoy coffee, food or drinks beside the sea.

Observe the coast of Asia Minor and Mount Mycale opposite the beach.

Visit the Alyki wetland without disturbing the birds or the protected natural environment.

Walk towards the ends of the bay, where the shore is usually quieter.

Combine the visit with Mykali, Paleokastro or Pythagorio.

๐Ÿ’ก Useful Advice

Arrive early during July and August because both the beach and parking spaces are limited.

Do not expect a large or secluded beach.

Bring sun protection even when planning to use an organised umbrella.

Supervise children continuously despite the very shallow water.

Remain within the marked bathing zone.

Do not move too far from the shore simply because the water remains shallow for a considerable distance.

Check the bus timetable before relying on public transport.

Allow for the possibility that the organised parking area may charge a fee.

Do not enter sensitive parts of the protected wetland or disturb the birds.

Do not leave rubbish on the sand, in the settlement or around the Alyki wetland.
