Balos Beach (Ormos Koumeikon) – Koumeika, Samos
🏖️ Balos Beach – Ormos Koumeikon in Samos
A large pebbled beach with clear waters and both organised and free sections beside the coastal settlement of Koumeika
Balos Beach is located in southwestern Samos and extends in front of the small coastal settlement of Ormos Koumeikon. It serves as the coastal harbour of the village of Koumeika and is one of the largest shores in the wider area, with a continuous coastline approaching one kilometre in length.
The extensive pebbled shore, clear waters and presence of restaurants, accommodation and limited organised sections make it suitable for both a short swim and a full day beside the sea. Despite the tourist activity, the bay retains a peaceful character and offers several free sections away from the sun loungers.
📍 Location
Balos is situated south and southwest of the village of Koumeika, within the Municipal Unit of Marathokampos in the Municipality of West Samos. The coastal settlement is officially known as Ormos Koumeikon, while the name Balos is used for both the beach and the wider coastal area.
The distance from Koumeika is approximately 3 kilometres. The road descends from the village towards the southern coast and ends at the seaside settlement, where the shore, houses, accommodation and dining establishments extend along the bay.
🏘️ The Coastal Settlement
Ormos Koumeikon is a small coastal settlement rather than simply an isolated beach. Houses, rental rooms, apartments and dining establishments are located close to the sea, without creating the intensive appearance of a large tourist resort.
Development remains low-rise and follows the coastline. In several places, the beach remains open and free, while other sections have seasonal facilities serving visitors during the summer.
⚓ The Small Pier and the Character of the Bay
A small pier is located close to the coastal settlement and mainly serves small fishing boats and private vessels. Its presence is connected with the traditional role of Ormos Koumeikon as the coastal harbour of the inland village of Koumeika.
Fishing boats and small vessels form part of the scenery without turning the area into an organised port. Swimmers should avoid mooring points and the routes used by boats approaching the shore.
🏝️ The Coastline and Natural Landscape
The beach extends along a large southern bay, with low vegetation, trees and mountainous scenery further inland. The open view across the southern Aegean and the slopes rising behind the coast create a characteristic landscape of southwestern Samos.
The coastline does not have the same form throughout its entire length. There are wider areas providing more space, narrower sections in front of buildings and small natural inlets near the ends of the bay.
Trees grow close to certain parts of the beach and provide limited natural shade. The shade does not cover most of the shore and changes according to the time of day, so a personal beach umbrella is useful in the free sections.
🏖️ The Shore and Its Composition
The shore consists mainly of medium-sized and large pebbles. Smaller sections with sand and finer natural materials appear between the pebbles, particularly towards the southeastern side of the bay.
The composition is not completely uniform throughout the beach. Large light-coloured pebbles dominate some areas, while other sections contain smaller pebbles, gravel and narrow strips of sand close to the sea.
Water shoes provide greater comfort when walking and entering the sea, particularly in sections with larger or less stable pebbles.
🌊 The Water and Seabed
The waters of Balos are clean and transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue and turquoise close to the shore to deeper blue towards the outer part of the bay. The clarity of the water allows the pebbled seabed to be observed easily.
The seabed includes pebbles, small stones and occasional sandy areas. The increase in depth is generally moderate, although it is not the same throughout the beach. Some sections provide a gentler entry, while in others the water becomes deeper more quickly after the first few metres.
Visitors who are unfamiliar with the beach should check the entry point before moving farther from the shore, particularly when waves are present.
🌬️ Wind and Waves
Balos is located along the southern coastline of Samos and is not completely protected from winds coming from every direction. On days with mild weather conditions, the sea may be calm and particularly clear.
When the wind strengthens from the direction of the bay’s opening, waves can develop and become noticeable in the more exposed sections. The shape and size of the beach mean that conditions may vary slightly from one end to the other.
Checking the wind forecast before visiting is useful, particularly for families with young children and visitors who prefer completely calm water.
🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling
The excellent visibility and variety of the seabed provide pleasant conditions for swimming with a mask and snorkel. Small fish can be observed above the pebbles, stones and rockier areas of the coastline.
The larger sections of the beach allow comfortable swimming without all visitors gathering in the same place. The areas close to the ends of the bay and the points where the seabed becomes more varied are particularly interesting for snorkelling.
An organised water-equipment rental centre has not been confirmed, so visitors should bring their own mask and snorkel.
🎣 Fishing and Gentle Activities
The beach and small pier are also used for recreational fishing, particularly during the morning and late afternoon. The length of the shoreline makes it possible to choose points away from most swimmers.
Balos is mainly suited to relaxed swimming, snorkelling, fishing and walking along the coast. The operation of an organised water-sports centre has not been confirmed.
👨👩👧👦 Suitability for Families
Easy road access, food options, organised seating and the possibility of parking close to the sea make Balos a practical choice for families. There are also free sections for visitors who prefer to use their own equipment.
The pebbled shore makes playing more difficult for very young children, and water shoes are recommended. Entry into the sea and the increase in depth differ between sections, so families should select an area with a gentler seabed.
Permanent lifeguard coverage across the entire beach has not been confirmed. Children must remain under constant supervision, particularly when waves are present.
☂️ Organisation and Umbrellas
Balos is a partially organised beach. Umbrellas and sun loungers are available in selected sections close to dining establishments and accommodation, while a large part of the shoreline remains free.
The exact size of the organised sections and the conditions for using the equipment may change from one summer season to another. The extensive coastline usually allows visitors to choose between an organised position and a free area.
🍽️ Restaurants and Food Options
Dining establishments offering food, drinks and coffee operate along Ormos Koumeikon. Their presence allows visitors to spend several hours in the area without returning to Koumeika or travelling to a larger seaside settlement.
The establishments are located at different points along the beach and do not all provide the same service to the sun loungers. Outside the main summer season, the operation of some businesses may be limited.
🏠 Accommodation near the Beach
Rental rooms, apartments and small accommodation units are available in Ormos Koumeikon, several of them very close to the shore. The area is suitable for visitors seeking peaceful accommodation beside the sea and away from the larger tourist centres.
The presence of accommodation does not alter the low-rise character of the bay, as most buildings are small and form part of the coastal settlement.
🚿 Showers, Changing Rooms and Toilets
Showers and changing areas have been recorded at organised points along the beach. These facilities are connected with seasonal operations and are not distributed evenly across the entire long coastline.
Toilets are available through the dining establishments. They are not independent public toilets positioned throughout the beach.
🚗 Access by Car or Motorcycle
Access is from the village of Koumeika via a paved road descending towards Ormos Koumeikon. The route is short, and vehicles can reach the coastal settlement and points very close to the shore.
No walking route or descent along a difficult path is required. The road has bends as it descends from the village, so careful driving is necessary.
🅿️ Parking Area
Free parking options are available close to the beach and throughout the settlement. The exact distance from the shore depends on the section of Balos selected by each visitor.
On busy days, the spaces in front of the dining establishments and organised sections fill first. Vehicles should be parked without blocking traffic, accommodation entrances or access to the small pier.
♿ Accessibility
Road access to points very close to the beach helps elderly visitors and people who cannot walk long distances.
Dedicated accessible parking spaces, a continuous stable pathway across the pebbles, an access ramp or a SEATRAC system have not been confirmed. Independent wheelchair movement across the shore is difficult, so the beach should not be listed as fully accessible for people with disabilities.
🌞 The Atmosphere of the Beach
Balos combines the character of a small coastal settlement with the size of a large natural beach. The atmosphere is livelier close to the dining establishments and sun loungers, while the more distant sections are quieter.
Even during the high season, the length of the beach helps spread visitors across the coastline. Summer weekends attract more families and residents from the wider area.
💃 The Name Balos
According to local tradition, the name of the beach is associated with Balos, the well-known traditional island dance usually performed by a couple.
At the same time, the official geographical name of the settlement remains Ormos Koumeikon, emphasising its relationship with the village of Koumeika.
🤿 What Is Worth Doing
Swim in different sections of the extensive beach, choosing the area with the entry point and wave conditions that suit you best.
Use a mask and snorkel close to the rocky points and near the ends of the bay.
Walk along the shoreline and observe the changes between large pebbles, finer gravel and small strips of sand.
Combine your swim with food or coffee at one of the establishments in the coastal settlement.
Observe the small boats and pier that reflect the traditional role of the area as the coastal harbour of Koumeika.
💡 Useful Advice
