Psili Ammos Marathokampos Beach, also known as Chrysi Ammos or Golden Sand, is located on the southwestern side of Samos, west of Kampos Marathokampos and Votsalakia.

It is one of the best-known sandy beaches on the island and stands out for its golden sand, very shallow water and natural setting beneath the imposing slopes of Mount Kerkis.

The beach has organised sections with umbrellas and sun loungers, together with plenty of free space. Pine trees, rocky slopes and clear blue-green water create one of the most distinctive coastal landscapes of western Samos.

📍 Location

Psili Ammos is located on the southwestern coast of Samos, approximately 5 kilometres west of Kampos Marathokampos and Votsalakia.

The beach lies along the route towards Limnionas, within a green area at the southern foothills of Mount Kerkis.

It is approximately 38–39 kilometres from Pythagorio, and access follows the coastal road network of southwestern Samos.

Administratively, it belongs to the Community of Marathokampos, the Municipal Unit of Marathokampos and the Municipality of West Samos.

🏝️ A Sandy Shore beneath Mount Kerkis

The beach lies within an open bay on the southern coast, with the slopes of Mount Kerkis rising impressively behind it.

The landscape creates a distinctive combination of mountain and sea. Pine trees and Mediterranean vegetation approach the shoreline, while the blue Aegean extends towards the open horizon.

Despite the open setting, the sea is usually calm and does not generally experience the strong wave action found at many beaches along the northern coast of Samos.

📏 Length and Width of the Shore

Psili Ammos is approximately 550 metres long and has an average width of around 15 metres.

The extensive shoreline offers ample space in both the organised sections and the free areas.

The width is not uniform along the entire beach. In some places the sandy shore is broader, while near the ends it becomes narrower because of rocks, pine trees and natural formations.

During the peak tourist season, the central organised sections attract more visitors, while the ends of the beach are usually quieter.

🏖️ The Sand and Shore

The shore is covered mainly with fine golden sand, which is also the origin of the alternative name Golden Sand.

Small white pebbles appear in certain sections, particularly close to the waterline and towards the ends of the beach.

The beach remains mainly sandy and is suitable for walking, playing, sunbathing and relaxing comfortably on a towel.

The sand can become very hot during the middle of the day, making sandals useful when walking to and from the sea.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The water is clean and transparent, with blue, blue-green and turquoise shades.

The seabed is mainly sandy and slopes very gently. In several places the depth remains close to half a metre for many metres from the shore.

The gradual increase in depth allows comfortable walking through the water and relaxed swimming without sudden changes.

Small pebbles or stones may appear near the entrance in some sections, although special water shoes are not normally necessary.

Despite the shallow water close to the shore, the sea can feel relatively cool, particularly when currents are present or after strong winds.

During the warmest months, the temperature is generally pleasant for extended swimming, although it is not always as warm as the water in smaller and more enclosed bays.

The water temperature varies according to the season, time of day, wind and sea circulation.

🌬️ Wind and Wave Conditions

The sea at Psili Ammos is usually calm, with small or limited wave action.

On windy days, the wind often blows from the land towards the open sea. This may not create large waves close to the shore, but it requires particular caution with inflatables, air mattresses and lightweight equipment.

Objects can quickly be carried towards deeper water, even when the surface appears relatively calm.

Visitors should assess the actual conditions on arrival and avoid using inflatables when the wind is blowing offshore.

Psili Ammos is particularly suitable for families with children.

The fine sand, sandy seabed, very gradual increase in depth and usually calm sea create friendly conditions for swimming and play.

The size of the beach allows families to choose between organised sections and quieter free areas.

Children must remain under constant supervision, particularly on days when the wind blows from the land towards the sea or when they are using inflatable toys.

🛟 Swimming Safety

The shallow water close to the shore makes entering the sea and relaxed swimming relatively easy.

Swimmers should not move too far from the shore simply because the seabed remains shallow for a considerable distance. Farther out, sea currents and small-boat traffic may be present.

Extra caution is necessary on days with offshore winds, as inflatables and lightweight equipment can be carried towards the open sea.

Permanent lifeguard coverage throughout the entire summer season has not been confirmed.

Sections of the beach are organised with umbrellas and sun loungers during the summer season.

The organised zones are served by nearby businesses, and charges or conditions of use may vary by season.

The entire beach is not covered with sun loungers. Plenty of free space remains for visitors using their own towels, chairs or umbrellas.

Quieter areas are found mainly towards the ends of the shore, away from the central organised sections.

🍽️ Restaurants, Cafés and Drinks

Seasonal restaurants, cafés and bars operate close to and above the beach.

Visitors can combine swimming with food, coffee, soft drinks, snacks or alcoholic beverages without having to return to Kampos Marathokampos.

Some of the establishments are located on slightly elevated ground and offer open views over the beach and the Aegean Sea.

Opening periods and operating hours vary outside the main summer season.

A seasonal café-bar operates in the area and serves visitors using the beach and its organised sections.

Service to the sun loungers, available choices and opening hours may differ from one summer season to another.

Its presence supports longer stays at the beach without changing the natural character of the free sections.

🚿 Showers, Changing Rooms and Toilets

Showers, changing areas and toilets are available in the organised sections.

The facilities are mainly connected with the businesses and organised zones and are not distributed along the entire length of the beach.

Their availability is primarily seasonal and may vary depending on the operation of the facilities.

🌳 Pine Trees and Natural Shade

Pine trees surround much of the beach and create a particularly attractive natural setting.

Natural shade is found mainly behind the shore and close to the ends, but it does not cover the entire sandy area evenly.

In the eastern section, a large rocky formation and natural recess provide shade and cooler conditions.

Visitors should always be cautious when sitting beneath rocky overhangs, particularly after severe weather.

🌿 Protected Natural Environment

The beach lies within the wider protected natural area of Mount Kerkis.

The steep slopes, pine forests, rocky formations and Mediterranean vegetation are central elements of the landscape.

Development around the beach is limited and concentrated mainly around the dining and visitor-service areas.

Visitors should avoid lighting fires, damaging vegetation or leaving rubbish, as the area is particularly vulnerable during summer.

🌿 Seaweed and Natural Materials

Depending on the wind and sea currents, seaweed, small pieces of wood or other natural materials may occasionally appear along the shore.

Their quantity varies from day to day and may increase after changes in the weather.

Their occasional presence is a natural part of the coastal environment and does not by itself indicate poor water quality.

🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling

The central section is ideal for relaxed swimming and playing in the shallow water.

The sandy seabed does not provide the same variety as a rocky shore, but the clear water offers good visibility.

The ends of the beach, close to the rocks, provide more interest for snorkelling, with small fish and natural underwater formations.

Snorkelling should remain close to the shore and requires particular caution when the wind blows towards the open sea.

🏄 Sea Activities

There is no permanent organised water-sports centre on the beach.

The main activities are swimming, playing in the sand, sunbathing, walking through the shallow water and snorkelling close to the rocky ends.

SUP boards and kayaks should only be used when conditions are calm and the wind is not blowing towards the open sea.

🚗 Road Access

Access is provided by a paved local road connecting Kampos Marathokampos with the western coast and Limnionas.

From the main road, a short local route leads towards the parking area above the beach.

A walk of approximately 180 metres is required from the parking area to the shore.

The route is short but includes a downhill section and an uphill return, which should be considered when carrying children, pushchairs or large amounts of equipment.

🅿️ Parking

A free parking area is available above the beach, together with a limited number of additional spaces near the road.

The parking area is not particularly large and may fill quickly during July and August.

Morning arrival is preferable for visitors wishing to find a nearby space and avoid carrying equipment over a greater distance.

Vehicles must be parked without blocking the road, entrances or the movement of other vehicles.

🚌 Access by Bus

The wider Marathokampos area is served by seasonal public transport.

Routes and stops vary by season, and a daily direct connection to the entrance of the beach should not be assumed.

Visitors wishing to use the bus should check the current KTEL Samos timetable before departure.

A car, motorcycle or taxi remains the most practical option for reaching the beach.

♿ Accessibility

The walking route from the parking area to the shore and the sandy surface make independent access difficult for people with reduced mobility.

There is no dedicated accessible walkway, ramp or independent sea-access system.

Movement with a wheelchair or walking aids requires assistance and prior communication with nearby facilities.

🌅 Afternoon Atmosphere

During the afternoon, the light becomes softer and highlights the golden tones of the sand and the green slopes behind the beach.

Visitor numbers often decrease, particularly outside July and August, and the beach develops a calmer atmosphere.

Its location in southwestern Samos provides attractive afternoon light and open views over the Aegean, although the exact position of sunset changes with the season.

🚶 Combining the Visit with Nearby Places

A visit can easily be combined with Kampos Marathokampos and Votsalakia, approximately 5 kilometres farther east.

Limnionas lies to the west and is another sandy and organised beach beneath Mount Kerkis.

The village of Marathokampos and the coastal settlement of Ormos Marathokampos can also be included in a wider route through the area.

Visitors with a suitable vehicle, enough time and proper preparation can also explore natural and religious points of interest on the slopes of Mount Kerkis.

💎 Blue Flag

Psili Ammos Marathokampos Beach is not included among the beaches of Samos awarded the Blue Flag for 2026.

Its absence from the list is not an assessment of the daily cleanliness or clarity of the water.

The Blue Flag programme requires organised participation, systematic monitoring, specific infrastructure and visitor services in addition to water quality.

Combine the visit with Votsalakia, Limnionas or the village of Marathokampos.
