Velanidia of Koumeika
🌊 Velanidia of Koumaika, Samos – The Small Coastal Settlement on the Gulf of Marathokampos
Velanidia of Koumaika is a small coastal settlement in southwestern Samos, on the shores of the Gulf of Marathokampos. It is a quiet place for permanent and summer residence, characterised by scattered development, a low elevation and direct access to the long beach of Velanidia.
The settlement extends between the sea and the agricultural landscape of southern Samos. Olive groves, cultivated land, low Mediterranean vegetation and coastal trees create an open and peaceful environment, quite different from the island’s densely developed tourist resorts.
Velanidia does not have a compact traditional centre or a large village square. Its identity is connected mainly with the sea, the beach, the scattered houses and the agricultural zone extending behind the coastline.
📍 Location and natural environment
Velanidia is located on the southern coast of Samos, in the eastern part of the wider Gulf of Marathokampos. It is built at an elevation of approximately 16 metres, a short distance from the sea.
The terrain is relatively gentle near the coast, while further inland it rises gradually towards the cultivated areas and villages of southwestern Samos.
The natural landscape includes olive groves, fields, small gardens, Mediterranean shrubs and coastal trees. The low-density development and open spaces provide unobstructed views towards the Aegean Sea and the southern coastline of the island.
Velanidia’s location provides easy access to Ormos Marathokampou, Koumaika, Ormos Koumaikon and the wider coastal zone of southwestern Samos.
🏛️ Administrative identity of the settlement
Velanidia is an officially recognised settlement of the Municipal Community of Koumaika.
Administratively, it belongs to:
✅ The Municipal Community of Koumaika
✅ The Municipal Unit of Marathokampos
✅ The Municipality of Western Samos
✅ The Regional Unit of Samos
✅ The North Aegean Region
The Municipal Community of Koumaika includes three officially registered settlements:
✅ Koumaika
✅ Velanidia
✅ Ormos Koumaikon
Velanidia was officially recognised as a separate settlement on 17 March 1991 and was incorporated into the former Community of Koumaika.
In 1997, it became part of the Municipality of Marathokampos, in 2010 of the unified Municipality of Samos and, since 2019, it has belonged to the Municipality of Western Samos.
📜 The development of the settlement
Velanidia developed as a small coastal and agricultural settlement in the lowland zone between Koumaika and the Gulf of Marathokampos.
The wider area was used for farming, olive cultivation, gardens and seasonal agricultural activities. Its proximity to the sea also encouraged the construction of homes and facilities connected with fishing, summer residence and the needs of the surrounding farmland.
Its official administrative recognition in 1991 reflected the gradual formation of a permanent residential centre in the area.
Velanidia did not develop into a large village or an organised tourist resort. It retained its small scale, scattered development and peaceful character, features that remain evident today.
📝 The name Velanidia
The name “Velanidia” refers to the oak tree and to the natural vegetation that once characterised many agricultural and semi-mountainous areas of Samos.
The addition “of Koumaika” is used to indicate the settlement’s administrative and geographical connection with the Community of Koumaika.
The official name of the settlement is “Velanidia”, while the fuller form “Velanidia of Koumaika” is often used in geographical references.
👥 Population and present-day life
According to the 2021 Population Census, Velanidia has 19 permanent residents.
In the 2011 Census, 10 permanent residents were recorded. The increase in the registered population does not change its character as one of the smallest officially recognised settlements of Samos.
Daily life is peaceful and closely connected with permanent residence, agricultural work, the sea and small-scale tourism activity.
During the summer season, the area becomes busier as holiday homes and accommodation facilities are used and more visitors arrive at the beach.
🏘️ The form and development of the settlement
Velanidia does not have the dense urban fabric of an old Samian village. Houses and other buildings are distributed along the local roads and close to the coastline.
Development is low-rise and scattered, consisting of detached houses, holiday homes, small accommodation facilities, courtyards and gardens. Open land, olive groves and cultivated plots remain between the buildings.
Most homes have direct or nearby access to the sea, while several locations provide open views towards the Gulf of Marathokampos.
The limited scale of development allows the area to preserve its peaceful agricultural and coastal character.
🏖️ Velanidia Beach
Velanidia Beach extends in front of the settlement and is a long, relatively quiet stretch of coastline in southwestern Samos.
The beach is covered mainly with medium and large pebbles, while sandy sections appear towards its southeastern end. The water is clear and becomes deeper relatively quickly in several places.
Different access points are found along the coast. The beach does not have the same form throughout, as pebbled sections alternate with smaller sandy areas and places with coastal vegetation.
Its considerable length allows visitors to find quieter sections even during the summer months.
🌊 Sea and swimming conditions
The beach faces south and is less exposed to the strong northern winds that often affect the beaches of northern Samos.
Sea conditions depend on the wind direction. With northerly winds, the water is often calm, while southern and southwesterly winds may create waves.
The medium and large pebbles make sea shoes useful, particularly for children or visitors who may find entering and leaving the water difficult.
The clarity of the water and the open seabed make the area suitable for swimming, snorkelling and peaceful marine exploration.
🌿 Agricultural landscape and cultivation
Behind the coastal zone extends an agricultural landscape of olive groves, cultivated fields, small family gardens and areas of Mediterranean vegetation.
The lowland zone of Velanidia has gentle terrain and has long been used for agricultural cultivation.
The wider area includes:
✅ Olive groves
✅ Vegetable gardens
✅ Fruit trees
✅ Small vineyards
✅ Aromatic and wild plants
✅ Coastal trees and shrubs
The agricultural landscape is a central part of the settlement’s identity and creates a gradual transition from the houses towards the inland countryside.
🌳 Natural vegetation and coastal environment
The vegetation around Velanidia consists of olive trees, mastic shrubs, oleanders, low Mediterranean bushes and trees adapted to coastal conditions.
Tamarisk trees and other salt-tolerant plants grow near the sea. In some places, they provide natural shade close to the beach.
The open agricultural areas and limited development allow small birds, insects and other species associated with the Mediterranean rural environment to remain present.
The area is suitable for peaceful walks, landscape observation and photography, particularly during spring and in the late afternoon.
🏘️ The connection with Koumaika
Koumaika is the historical and administrative centre of the community to which Velanidia belongs.
The more elevated village lies approximately four kilometres northeast of the coastal settlement and is connected with it through the local road network.
The two settlements have different characters. Koumaika retains a denser traditional layout, a village square, churches and a structured residential centre, while Velanidia is characterised by scattered houses, agricultural land and a direct relationship with the sea.
Visiting both settlements provides a complete picture of the transition from the inland areas of southwestern Samos to the coastal zone.
⚓ The connection with Ormos Marathokampou
Ormos Marathokampou lies a short distance west of Velanidia and is the nearest organised coastal centre in the area.
The settlement has a harbour, marina, shops, dining establishments, accommodation and basic services for residents and visitors to the wider coastal zone.
Velanidia Beach essentially forms the eastern continuation of the coastline outside Ormos Marathokampou.
The short distance allows visitors to combine the tranquillity of Velanidia with the greater selection of dining, walking and service options available in the neighbouring settlement.
🌅 Views and afternoon atmosphere
From the coast and the open areas of the settlement, the view extends towards the Gulf of Marathokampos and the southern Aegean Sea.
The morning light illuminates the beach and the low inland slopes, while softer colours spread across the sea and agricultural landscape during the afternoon.
Limited traffic and the absence of dense commercial activity create a peaceful atmosphere after sunset.
Velanidia is suitable for visitors who prefer a coastal location without intense nightlife or tourist noise.
🛏️ Facilities and everyday services
Velanidia has limited accommodation options, mainly in small lodging establishments, rental homes and holiday apartments.
The settlement does not have a large commercial centre or an extensive range of services. For basic shopping, more dining options, a pharmacy and other everyday needs, residents and visitors rely on the larger surrounding settlements.
The nearest options are found in:
✅ Ormos Marathokampou
✅ Koumaika
✅ Ormos Koumaikon
✅ Kampos Marathokampou
✅ Marathokampos
Parking is generally easier than in densely developed settlements, although access to houses, fields and the beach should always remain unobstructed.
🥾 Walks and nearby routes
The area is more suitable for peaceful walks and short coastal or agricultural routes than for organised mountain hiking.
From Velanidia, visitors can follow routes:
✅ Along the beach
✅ Towards Ormos Marathokampou
✅ Towards Koumaika
✅ Towards Ormos Koumaikon and Balos Beach
