๐Ÿž๏ธ Sourides, Samos โ€“ A Small Rural Settlement near Karlovasi

Sourides is a small semi-mountainous settlement in northwestern Samos, approximately 5 kilometres south of Karlovasi. It stands at an altitude of about 210 metres, within a peaceful rural landscape of olive groves, cultivated fields and low Mediterranean vegetation.

The settlement lies close to the road connecting Karlovasi with Agioi Theodoroi and forms part of the agricultural interior of western Samos. Its small size, limited traffic and lack of intensive tourist development preserve its quiet and authentic character.

Administratively, Sourides belongs to the Municipal Community of Karlovasi, the Municipal Unit of Karlovasi, the Municipality of Western Samos, the Regional Unit of Samos and the North Aegean Region. According to the 2021 census, the settlement has 21 permanent residents.

๐Ÿ“ Location and Character

Sourides lies inland, between the wider Karlovasi area and the villages leading towards the central and southwestern parts of the island.

Nearby settlements include Sakkoulaika and Sevastaika, while Agioi Theodoroi, Kastania and Karlovasi are only a short drive away. Its location provides convenient access both to the town and to the rural road network of western Samos.

The settlement has developed along a gentle slope and is not densely built. Houses stand among courtyards, small gardens and agricultural plots, creating the appearance of a sparsely developed rural neighbourhood.

๐Ÿ“œ History and Former Name

The settlement was officially recognised on 18 December 1920 under the name โ€œSiourrides or Patiniotesโ€ and was incorporated into the former Community of Neo Karlovasi.

On 16 May 1928, its name was officially changed to โ€œSouridesโ€, which it retains today.

Local tradition connects the name with the Souris family, members of which lived in the area. The former secondary name โ€œPatiniotesโ€ indicates that the small settlement was also known through a family or local nickname, as was common among several rural settlements of Samos.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Administrative Development

Since its official recognition, Sourides remained administratively connected with Neo Karlovasi and later with the Municipality of Karlovasi.

In 2010, under the Kallikratis administrative reform, the settlement became part of the unified Municipality of Samos. Following the division of the island into two municipalities in 2019, Sourides has belonged to the Municipality of Western Samos.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Population Development

Sourides has consistently retained the character of a very small settlement. In 1991, it had 11 residents, while the population increased to 27 in 2001 and 28 in 2011.

According to the 2021 census, its permanent population declined to 21 residents.

Despite its small population, several homes and agricultural properties continue to be used by families who maintain connections with the settlement and the wider Karlovasi area.

โ›ช The Church of Zoodochos Pigi

The Church of Zoodochos Pigi is the principal religious landmark of the settlement.

The church belongs to the Archpriestly District of Karlovasi and is a recognisable feature of the small community of Sourides. Its presence connects the settlement with the religious traditions and social life of the wider area.

Smaller chapels and religious sites can also be found among the agricultural plots and local roads surrounding the settlement.

๐Ÿก Homes and Rural Character

Sourides does not have the compact layout of the larger traditional villages of Samos. Its homes are scattered and combined with courtyards, storage buildings, agricultural structures and cultivated plots.

Older stone buildings, plastered houses with tiled roofs and more recent residences stand throughout the settlement. Low stone walls, olive trees and family gardens reinforce the image of a small Samian rural neighbourhood.

๐Ÿซ’ Rural Life and Cultivation

The character of Sourides is closely connected with agriculture. Olive cultivation is a defining feature of the landscape, while small orchards, fruit trees and family plots surround many of the homes.

The agricultural land follows the natural contours of the area and is divided by local roads, unpaved tracks and old stone walls. Daily life retains the quiet rhythm of a small countryside settlement, despite its short distance from Karlovasi.

๐ŸŒฟ Natural Environment

The countryside around Sourides is characterised by olive groves, agricultural land and low Mediterranean vegetation. Its inland position provides tranquillity and open views across the surrounding hills and cultivated slopes.

During spring, the vegetation becomes especially lush, while the local rural roads are suitable for short walks and gentle routes. Sourides is not an organised hiking destination, but it can easily be included in a relaxed exploration of the countryside around Karlovasi.

๐Ÿšถ The Visitor Experience

A visit to Sourides is particularly suitable for those interested in the smaller and lesser-known settlements of Samos and the rural life of the islandโ€™s western side.

There are no organised tourist facilities or major attractions. The experience is based on the tranquillity, simple architecture, agricultural landscape and atmosphere of a small settlement located close to town but following a very different pace of life.

Approximately 30 to 45 minutes are sufficient for a short walk through the settlement and a visit to the Church of Zoodochos Pigi.
