Pefkos of Samos
๐๏ธ Pefkos, Samos โ The Coastal Settlement and Former Port of Skoureika
Pefkos is a small coastal settlement in southern Samos, built around a peaceful bay on the islandโs southwestern coastline. It lies approximately 4.5 kilometres southwest of Skoureika and is one of the three coastal settlements belonging to the Municipal Community of Skoureika, together with Kampos and Perri.
The small settlement extends beside the sea, among olive groves, pine trees, low Mediterranean vegetation and rocky slopes. Its few houses, sheltered bay, fishing boats and pebbled shore create a peaceful coastal landscape far from the islandโs busier tourist areas.
According to the 2021 census, Pefkos has 16 permanent residents. Administratively, it belongs to the Municipal Community of Skoureika, the Municipal Unit of Marathokampos, the Municipality of Western Samos, the Regional Unit of Samos and the North Aegean Region.
๐ Location and Character
Pefkos is located on the southern coast of Samos, west of Perri and Psili Ammos of Skoureika. The settlement is arranged around a small natural bay opening towards the Gulf of Marathokampos.
The surrounding landscape combines olive groves, pine trees, cultivated land and rocky formations that extend almost to the sea. Limited construction and the absence of large-scale tourism development have preserved the peaceful, rural character of the area.
The houses are sparsely distributed along the coast and across the low slopes surrounding the bay. Some are occupied throughout the year, while others are used as holiday or seasonal residences.
๐๏ธ Administrative Development
Pefkos was officially recognised as a separate settlement on 17 March 1991 and was incorporated into the former Community of Skoureika.
In 1997, under the Kapodistrias administrative reform, it became part of the Municipality of Marathokampos together with Skoureika, Kampos and Perri. In 2010, it was incorporated into the unified Municipality of Samos and, since 2019, has belonged to the Municipality of Western Samos.
๐ฅ The Settlementโs Small Population
Pefkos remains one of the smallest officially recognised settlements on Samos.
The 2011 census recorded 13 permanent residents, while the population increased to 16 in 2021. During the summer months, the area becomes livelier due to holiday homes, visitors and the operation of a limited number of tourism-related services.
โ The Former Port of Skoureika
Pefkos once served as the coastal port of Skoureika and the surrounding agricultural area.
Warehouses once stood along the coast, where agricultural products from Skoureika, neighbouring villages and parts of central Samos were gathered. From there, the goods were loaded onto traditional sailing boats and transported to other parts of the island, as well as to Fournoi, Ikaria, Patmos and Lipsi.
This activity connected the agricultural production of the interior with the maritime trade routes of the eastern Aegean. The present appearance of the small bay still preserves something of that former relationship with the sea, particularly when small boats and fishing vessels are anchored there.
๐๏ธ The Settlement Today
Modern Pefkos consists of a small number of houses, holiday homes and agricultural buildings arranged around the beach and bay.
The area does not have the dense construction or extensive services of an organised holiday resort. During the summer, a limited number of accommodation and dining facilities may operate, while throughout the rest of the year the settlement maintains an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere.
The houses are surrounded by olive trees, gardens and natural vegetation, while everyday life remains closely connected with the sea, fishing and the agricultural activities of the wider area.
๐๏ธ Pefkos Beach
Pefkos Beach lies directly in front of the settlement and forms its main natural landmark.
The beach is approximately 150 metres long and has an average width of around 7 metres. The shore is mainly covered with medium and large pebbles, while stones and rocky sections appear in some places.
The beach is not organised with umbrellas or sunbeds and usually attracts only a limited number of visitors. Some natural shade is provided by trees near the shore, although it does not extend across the entire beach.
๐ The Sea and Seabed
The waters at Pefkos are clear and become relatively deep quite quickly in certain places. The seabed alternates between pebbles, stones, rocks and small sandy sections.
The natural bay provides some protection, although wind and waves can affect the shore on certain days. Water shoes are useful for entering the sea, particularly for children or visitors who find large pebbles difficult to walk on.
The clarity of the water and the rocky areas around the bay offer interesting conditions for observing the seabed with a mask when the sea is calm.
๐ฟ The Natural Environment
The vegetation around Pefkos reaches close to the sea and includes olive groves, pine trees, lentisk shrubs, low bushes and a variety of Mediterranean plants.
Rocky slopes, small ravines and cultivated land form a landscape that combines the rural character of southern Samos with the islandโs coastal environment.
The name of the settlement refers to the pine trees of the area, which provide shade and a distinctive fragrance during the warm summer days.
๐ซ Olive Groves and Agricultural Activity
Olive groves are the main feature of the cultivated land around the settlement and connect Pefkos with the agricultural tradition of Skoureika.
Stone walls and small terraces retain the soil on the slopes, while rural roads lead towards fields, orchards and small coastal properties.
Olive cultivation, limited fishing and seasonal tourism activity shape the areaโs present-day productive character.
๐ถ The Small Bay
The bay of Pefkos is used by small boats and fishing vessels, particularly during the summer months.
Their presence recalls the areaโs former maritime role, when traditional boats transported agricultural products and other goods.
The shore offers views across the Gulf of Marathokampos and the successive slopes of southern Samos. The landscape becomes especially attractive in the late afternoon, when the light falls across the sea and the rocky edges of the bay.
๐ก The Connection with Skoureika
Pefkos forms the natural maritime outlet of Skoureika and lies approximately 4.5 kilometres southwest of the village.
The route descends from the semi-mountainous slopes towards the sea, passing through olive groves, agricultural land and open viewpoints overlooking the southern coastline.
A visit can easily be combined with an exploration of Skoureika, the historic Church of Agios Georgios, the Church of Panagia and the Dimza spring.
๐๏ธ The Neighbouring Shores
The wider coastline of the Municipal Community of Skoureika also includes Perri, Psili Ammos and Kampos.
These shores are small, peaceful and less developed than the islandโs better-known beaches. They are connected by narrow coastal and rural roads and offer different views of southern Samos.
West of Pefkos, the coastline continues towards Balos of Koumeika and the Gulf of Marathokampos.
