🌿 Kastania, Samos – The Green Martyr Village on the Foothills of Mount Kerkis

Kastania, officially named Kastanea, is a small mountain village in northwestern Samos, built on the northeastern foothills of Mount Kerkis. It is situated on the eastern slope of Fteria Hill, surrounded by dense vegetation, at an altitude of approximately 350 metres.

The village stands out for its peaceful atmosphere, traditional houses, tiled roofs, narrow uphill streets and its square with a large plane tree and a public fountain. Its location offers views towards the Karlovasi area, the surrounding hills and, when visibility is clear, the eastern Aegean Sea and the coast of Asia Minor.

Beyond its natural beauty, Kastania holds a special place in the modern history of Samos. In August 1943, 27 of its residents were killed by the Italian Fascist occupation forces. Since 2025, the village has been officially recognised by the Greek State as a “Place of Martyrdom”.

📍 Location and natural environment

Kastania is located in the northwestern part of Samos, southwest of Karlovasi and north of Marathokampos. It is built on the northeastern foothills of Mount Kerkis, on the eastern slope of Fteria Hill.

The village extends across the natural slope of the terrain at an altitude of approximately 350 metres. The landscape is characterised by wooded hillsides, chestnut trees, plane trees, olive trees, vineyards, walnut trees, gardens and small cultivated areas.

The dense vegetation provides shade and cooler temperatures, particularly during spring and the summer months. From openings between the houses and from the higher points of the village, visitors can see Karlovasi, the northwestern slopes of Samos and parts of the eastern Aegean Sea.

🏛️ Administrative identity of the community

The Municipal Community of Kastanea belongs to the Municipal Unit of Karlovasia, within the Municipality of Western Samos. The municipality is part of the Regional Unit of Samos in the North Aegean Region.

The community includes one officially registered settlement:

✅ Kastanea, widely known as Kastania

The Community of Kastanea was officially established on 21 September 1918, with the settlement of the same name as its administrative seat. In 1997, the independent community was abolished and incorporated into the Municipality of Karlovasia.

In 2010, Kastanea became part of the unified Municipality of Samos, and since 2019 it has belonged to the Municipality of Western Samos.

📝 The names Kastanea and Kastania

The official administrative name of the settlement is “Kastanea”. In everyday use, however, the name “Kastania” has prevailed and is the form by which the village is better known among residents and visitors to Samos.

Different theories have been proposed regarding the origin of the name. One interpretation connects it with settlers who may have originated from other regions of Greece bearing the same name.

Local tradition and other historical references associate the name with the many chestnut trees that once grew, and can still be found, in the wider area. This explanation is considered the one most directly connected with the village’s natural landscape.

📜 Foundation and historical development

The earliest known written reference to Kastania appears in a land-sale agreement dating from 1613. This indicates that the village had already been established during the first decades following the resettlement of Samos, which began in the middle of the 16th century.

Approximately three kilometres northwest of the village stood the older settlement of Kalyvia, near Kastri Hill. The earliest known reference to Kalyvia dates from 1582.

The two settlements appear to have coexisted for a considerable period. Residents of Kalyvia gradually moved towards Kastania until the older settlement was eventually abandoned.

In 1666, Archbishop Joseph Georgirinis recorded 50 houses and one church in Kastania. During the following centuries, the village developed into an organised agricultural community, with farming, livestock raising and close connections with Karlovasi and Marathokampos.

👥 Population and present-day life

According to the final results of the 2021 Population Census, the Municipal Community of Kastanea has 130 permanent residents. In the 2011 Census, 148 residents were recorded.

The population decline is characteristic of many mountain villages on Samos. Nevertheless, Kastania maintains permanent community life and close ties between its residents and those originating from the village who now live in other parts of the island or outside Samos.

Activity increases during the summer months, when people with family roots in the village return and religious, cultural and social gatherings are organised.

🏘️ The layout and architecture of the village

Kastania has a compact settlement pattern adapted to the steep slope of the terrain. The houses are built on different levels and connected by narrow streets, small uphill lanes, stairways and passages.

Traditional residences with stone foundations, rendered façades, tiled roofs, wooden doors and windows, iron balconies and courtyards with flowers, grapevines and fruit trees have been preserved.

Newer and renovated houses stand among the older buildings and largely respect the scale and peaceful character of the village.

The village is best explored on foot. Several streets are steep, but distances within the central settlement are short.

🌳 The square, plane tree and public fountain

The small square is the natural centre of Kastania. One of its main features is the large plane tree, which provides dense shade and creates a cool meeting place during the summer months.

The public fountain is located in the area of the square and is associated with the local springs and abundant water resources. Nearby, the old communal washhouse has also been preserved, providing a reminder of everyday village life in earlier times.

The square is a suitable place for a short stop before exploring the neighbourhoods and the higher parts of the settlement.

⛪ The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary

The parish church of Kastania is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and is the village’s most important religious and architectural monument.

The church was built in 1902 in the basilica style. To secure the necessary funding, the Parliament of the Principality of Samos approved the organisation of a lottery, a method used at the time to finance important community projects.

The official inauguration of the church took place on 28 September 1924. Its overall form, dome and bell tower stand out among the village roofs and form a major visual landmark of the settlement.

🎉 The summer festival

One of the most important social events in Kastania is the traditional summer festival held on 24 August.

The event is associated with the parish of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary and attracts residents, people originating from the village and visitors from other parts of Samos.

Music, dancing, food and the participation of the local community preserve the character of the festival as a genuine village gathering rather than simply a tourism event.

🍇 Viticulture and agricultural production

The economy of Kastania was traditionally based on agriculture. Viticulture, olive cultivation and vegetable production were among the residents’ main activities.

Vineyards, olive groves, small gardens and cultivated terraces remain on the hillsides surrounding the village. The terrain required the construction of agricultural terraces and dry-stone walls to retain the soil and make use of the sloping land.

Production was intended mainly for household consumption and local distribution, while the short distance from Karlovasi and Marathokampos facilitated the transportation of agricultural products.

🌰 Chestnut trees and vegetation

Chestnut trees are a characteristic feature of the wider area and have been directly associated with the popular explanation of the village’s name.

Together with plane trees, walnut trees, pines, olive trees and vineyards, they create a particularly green environment that differs from the drier coastal landscapes of western Samos.

The vegetation is at its densest during spring and early summer. In autumn, the changing colours of the deciduous trees also create attractive scenery for walking and photography.

🕯️ The events of August 1943

Kastania is associated with one of the most tragic chapters of the Italian occupation of Samos.

On 29 August 1943, during clearance operations by Italian Fascist forces against resistance groups in the area, ten residents were killed at locations surrounding the village.

On the following day, 30 August 1943, another seventeen young men were executed at Flevitsa, near Kastania. In total, 27 residents of the village were killed.

A further 17 residents of neighbouring communities were killed during the broader wave of violence that took place on the same days. The commemorative events honour a total of 44 Samian patriots who lost their lives at the hands of the Italian Fascist occupation forces.

🏛️ The memorial to the executed residents

A memorial honouring the victims was erected in 1981 at Flevitsa, where the mass execution of 30 August 1943 took place.

The site is a place of historical remembrance for Kastania and the whole of Samos. Memorial events and ceremonies are held there with the participation of residents, local authorities, organisations and descendants of the victims.

The memorial should be visited with the respect appropriate to a place of martyrdom and collective memory.

🎖️ Official recognition as a Place of Martyrdom

On 8 August 2025, Kastania was officially recognised by the Greek State as a “Place of Martyrdom”.

The recognition was published in Government Gazette 146, Series A, and came 82 years after the events of August 1943.

The official designation acknowledges the sacrifice of the residents and includes Kastania among the Greek places associated with mass executions and crimes committed by occupation forces during the Second World War.

The area surrounding Kastania is suitable for peaceful routes through agricultural and wooded landscapes.

Small roads and rural paths pass through vineyards, olive groves, chestnut trees, agricultural terraces and former cultivated areas. Some locations offer views towards Karlovasi and the surrounding hills.

A visit can be combined with Karlovasi, Leka, Kosmadaioi, Marathokampos, Platanos and Kontaiika, creating an interesting road route through the mountainous and agricultural areas of western Samos.
