๐Ÿ–๏ธ Potokaki Beach in Samos
The longest beach in Samos, with pebbles and sandy sections, calm clear waters, organised facilities and free natural areas

Potokaki Beach extends along the southeastern coastline of Samos, west of Pythagoreio and very close to Samos International Airport โ€œAristarchos of Samosโ€. With a length of approximately 3.8 kilometres, it is considered the longest continuous beach on the island and offers many different options along its coastline.

The eastern section lies close to Pythagoreio, hotels and organised facilities, while the landscape becomes quieter and more natural as visitors continue westwards. This allows visitors to choose between an organised area with sun loungers and water activities or a free section with more space and less activity.

๐Ÿ“ Location

Potokaki is located approximately 3 kilometres west of Pythagoreio and around 14 kilometres south of Samos Town. The exact distance depends on the section of the beach selected, as the coastline extends for several kilometres.

The eastern end of the beach lies beside the airport area, while the coast continues westwards along the seaside settlement and the surrounding plain.

The settlement of Potokaki administratively belongs to the Community of Chora, the Municipal Unit of Pythagoreio and the Municipality of East Samos.

๐Ÿ๏ธ The Longest Beach in Samos

The coastline of Potokaki is approximately 3.8 kilometres long, with an average width of around 15 metres. Its form is not identical throughout its entire length, as wider and narrower sections, organised zones, areas in front of accommodation establishments and more natural stretches alternate along the shore.

Its considerable size is an important advantage, because even during the high tourist season there are sections where visitors can find more space.

The beach should not be regarded as one single organised complex. Facilities, the composition of the shore, natural shade and visitor activity differ noticeably from one area to another.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ The Shore and Its Composition

The shore consists mainly of small and medium-sized pebbles, with several sections where sand, fine gravel or a mixture of sand and pebbles can be found.

In certain places the surface is relatively smooth, while elsewhere the pebbles are larger and make walking more difficult without suitable footwear.

Water shoes are useful, particularly for children, elderly visitors and anyone who is not accustomed to walking over pebbles.

๐ŸŒŠ The Water and Seabed

The waters are clean and transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue and turquoise near the shore to deeper blue towards the open sea.

The seabed generally has a gentle slope, and the depth increases gradually. This formation makes several sections of the beach suitable for families and children, especially when the sea is calm.

The composition of the seabed largely follows that of the shore, with pebbles, small stones and sandy areas. Because the beach is very extensive, the slope and form of the seabed may differ from one section to another.

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Water Temperature and Feeling

The water usually has a normal and pleasant temperature during the summer season. It is not affected by a mountain stream or cold springs, as happens at certain other beaches in Samos.

The perceived temperature varies according to the season, time of day, sea currents and wind strength.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Wind and Sea Conditions

The sea at Potokaki is usually calm, particularly when compared with the exposed northern beaches of Samos. Its southern position protects it from the strong northern waves that frequently affect Kokkari, Potami and other beaches on the northern coast.

Wind may occur on certain days, often blowing from the land towards the sea. This wind does not always create strong waves close to the shore, but particular caution is required when using inflatables, SUP boards, pedal boats or small craft.

Visitors should check the direction and strength of the wind before moving away from the coast.

๐Ÿ’Ž Blue Flag 2026

The Blue Flag award does not apply to the entire 3.8-kilometre coastline, but to the specific organised section officially registered as โ€œDoryssa/Potokakiโ€.

This section is included in the official list of awarded beaches for 2026, with the award period running until 30 October 2026. The beach has a long history of awards and has received the distinction continuously since 2012.

The Blue Flag is associated with strict criteria concerning bathing-water quality, cleanliness, environmental management, visitor information and safety services within the designated managed section.

โ˜‚๏ธ Organised and Free Sections

Several parts of the beach have organised zones with umbrellas and sun loungers, mainly in front of hotels, dining establishments and beach bars.

At the same time, a large part of the coastline remains free, allowing visitors to use their own umbrellas and equipment.

The organised areas are concentrated mainly in the eastern and central sections, while quieter zones with fewer facilities and a more natural character are found further west.

Prices and conditions for using sun loungers vary according to the business and the summer season.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Food, Coffee and Drinks

Seasonal restaurants, dining establishments, cafรฉs and beach bars operate along the beach. Most options are located close to the organised sections and the seaside settlement.

Visitors can find food, snacks, coffee, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages without having to return to Pythagoreio.

Facilities are more limited in the remote and free sections, so carrying drinking water and basic supplies is advisable.

๐Ÿšฟ Showers, Changing Rooms and Toilets

Showers, changing rooms and toilets are available in the organised sections for the convenience of swimmers.

These facilities are not distributed across the entire length of the beach and are mainly connected with specific organised zones, accommodation establishments and visitor-service areas.

Their availability is seasonal and may differ from one section of the coast to another.

๐Ÿ„ Water Sports and Activities

Organised water activities operate in the eastern section of Potokaki. Depending on the season and weather conditions, water skiing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, SUP, kayaking, pedal boats and towable inflatables may be available.

The beach also offers space for beach volleyball, running and walking along the extensive coastline.

The availability of activities is seasonal and depends on the wind, sea conditions and operation of the relevant facilities.

๐Ÿคฟ Swimming and Snorkelling

The clear water and gentle slope of the seabed provide good conditions for swimming. Sandy areas offer easier access, while water shoes are helpful in the pebbled sections.

Snorkelling is enjoyable near areas with stones or small natural formations on the seabed, although Potokaki does not have the intensely rocky underwater character of smaller secluded coves.

In areas where motorised water sports operate, swimmers should remain within designated swimming zones and away from craft entry and exit corridors.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ Suitability for Families

Potokaki is suitable for families, particularly in sections where the shore is smoother, the depth increases gradually and organised facilities are available.

Easy access, food options, toilets, showers and the possibility of choosing between different areas make staying with children more convenient.

Families with very young children should preferably choose quiet sections away from water-sports corridors and areas with larger pebbles.

Shade is limited outside organised zones, so a personal umbrella is necessary when the available facilities are not used.

๐ŸŒณ Natural Shade

Tamarisk trees and other vegetation provide natural shade at certain points along the beach.

The shade is neither continuous nor sufficient for all visitors, particularly during the hours of intense sunshine.

In the free sections, an umbrella or another secure form of sun protection is essential.

โœˆ๏ธ Proximity to the Airport

The eastern section of the beach lies very close to the airport runway. From certain points, visitors can watch aircraft taking off or landing.

The presence of aircraft is a distinctive element of the experience. Many visitors find it impressive, while others may be disturbed by the temporary noise.

The frequency of aircraft movements depends on the flight schedule and is not the same throughout the day or the tourist season.

๐Ÿš— Road Access

Access is easy by car or motorcycle via paved roads from Pythagoreio, Chora and the airport area.

Because the beach is extremely long, different roads and entrances lead to its individual sections.

Visitors should decide in advance whether they prefer an organised area, a section close to the settlement, an area with water sports or a quieter western zone.

๐Ÿšถ Access on Foot and by Bicycle

The eastern sections can be reached on foot or by bicycle from Pythagoreio, depending on the exact starting point.

The route is not exclusively pedestrian throughout, and in certain places it is shared with vehicle traffic.

During the hot summer months, visitors need drinking water, a hat and protection from the sun, particularly around midday.

๐ŸšŒ Public Transport

The area is seasonally served by bus routes connecting Pythagoreio with other parts of southern Samos.

Routes and stops may change according to the tourist season. Visitors should check the current timetable before travelling.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Parking Areas

Free parking spaces and areas are available close to the different beach entrances along the extensive coastline.

Availability differs by section. Spaces near popular organised areas may fill early, while parking is generally easier in quieter zones.

Vehicles must not block the coastal road, accommodation entrances, private access points or emergency routes.

โ™ฟ Accessibility and SEATRAC

A SEATRAC system has been installed at Potokaki to provide independent sea access for people with disabilities or reduced mobility. Parking, a pathway, toilet, changing room, shaded area and shower have also been recorded at the site.

The operational status of the system should be checked before visiting, as it may be temporarily unavailable or may not have been installed for the entire summer season.

The enormous length of the beach means accessibility is not the same in every area. Independent access applies to the specific adapted section and not to the entire coastline.

๐ŸŒฟ The Eastern and Western Sections

The eastern section is the most developed, with hotels, accommodation, dining establishments, organised sun loungers and water activities.

The central section combines organised and free zones, offering easy access and more options for families.

Further west, the beach takes on a quieter and more natural character, with fewer facilities, greater distances between visitors and limited immediate services.

๐ŸŒ… Atmosphere and Views

Potokaki has a different atmosphere depending on the selected area. The organised sections have a livelier and more tourist-oriented character, while the free western zones are quieter.

From the shore there are open views towards the sea and the opposite coast of Asia Minor when visibility is clear.

The long, straight coastline is suitable for walking, particularly early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Combining the Visit with Pythagoreio

A visit to the beach can be combined with Pythagoreio, where visitors will find the picturesque harbour, archaeological monuments, museums, dining establishments and shops.

The short distance makes it possible to enjoy a morning swim at Potokaki and visit the historic settlement in the afternoon or evening.

Access to the attractions is easier by car, motorcycle or taxi, particularly during the hottest hours of the day.

๐Ÿคฟ What Is Worth Doing

Swim in one of the calm sections with gentle access and clear water.

Choose an organised area with sun loungers and facilities or a free section with your own equipment.

Try one of the available water activities in the eastern section.

Walk along the coastline early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Watch aircraft taking off and landing from a safe point on the beach.

Combine swimming with a visit to Pythagoreio and the attractions of the surrounding area.

๐Ÿ’ก Useful Advice

Choose in advance which section of the beach best suits your needs, as the coastline is extremely long.

Wear water shoes in sections with more pebbles.

Bring your own shade when choosing a free area.

Keep children away from water-sports traffic corridors.

Be careful of winds blowing from the land towards the sea, particularly when using inflatables or SUP boards.

Check the operational status of the SEATRAC system in advance when sea access is an essential requirement.

Do not approach the airport grounds or fenced installations to take photographs.

Do not leave rubbish in the free and natural sections of the coastline.
