Potokaki Beach extends along the southeastern coastline of Samos, west of Pythagoreio and very close to Samos International Airport “Aristarchos of Samos”. With a length of approximately 3.8 kilometres, it is considered the longest continuous beach on the island and offers many different options along its coastline.

The eastern section lies close to Pythagoreio, hotels and organised facilities, while the landscape becomes quieter and more natural as visitors continue westwards. This allows visitors to choose between an organised area with sun loungers and water activities or a free section with more space and less activity.

📍 Location

Potokaki is located approximately 3 kilometres west of Pythagoreio and around 14 kilometres south of Samos Town. The exact distance depends on the section of the beach selected, as the coastline extends for several kilometres.

The eastern end of the beach lies beside the airport area, while the coast continues westwards along the seaside settlement and the surrounding plain.

The settlement of Potokaki administratively belongs to the Community of Chora, the Municipal Unit of Pythagoreio and the Municipality of East Samos.

The coastline of Potokaki is approximately 3.8 kilometres long, with an average width of around 15 metres. The beach should not be regarded as one single organised complex. Facilities, the composition of the shore, natural shade and visitor activity differ noticeably from one area to another.

The shore consists mainly of small and medium-sized pebbles, with several sections where sand, fine gravel or a mixture of sand and pebbles can be found.

In certain places the surface is relatively smooth, while elsewhere the pebbles are larger and make walking more difficult without suitable footwear.

Water shoes are useful, particularly for children, elderly visitors and anyone who is not accustomed to walking over pebbles.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The waters are clean and transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue and turquoise near the shore to deeper blue towards the open sea.

💎 Blue Flag 2026

The Blue Flag award does not apply to the entire 3.8-kilometre coastline, but to the specific organised section officially registered as “Doryssa/Potokaki”.

This section is included in the official list of awarded beaches for 2026, with the award period running until 30 October 2026. The beach has a long history of awards and has received the distinction continuously since 2012.

The Blue Flag is associated with strict criteria concerning bathing-water quality, cleanliness, environmental management, visitor information and safety services within the designated managed section.

Several parts of the beach have organised zones with umbrellas and sun loungers, mainly in front of hotels, dining establishments and beach bars.

At the same time, a large part of the coastline remains free, allowing visitors to use their own umbrellas and equipment.

The organised areas are concentrated mainly in the eastern and central sections, while quieter zones with fewer facilities and a more natural character are found further west.

The availability of activities is seasonal and depends on the wind, sea conditions and operation of the relevant facilities.

The clear water and gentle slope of the seabed provide good conditions for swimming. Sandy areas offer easier access, while water shoes are helpful in the pebbled sections.

Snorkelling is enjoyable near areas with stones or small natural formations on the seabed, although Potokaki does not have the intensely rocky underwater character of smaller secluded coves.

The enormous length of the beach means accessibility is not the same in every area. Independent access applies to the specific adapted section and not to the entire coastline.

The central section combines organised and free zones, offering easy access and more options for families.
