Petalides Beach is located along the northern coastline of Samos, in the coastal area of Kourountere, west of Agios Konstantinos and east of Karlovasi. It extends in front of the small coastal settlement of Petalides and lies very close to the main road connecting Samos Town with Karlovasi.

It is a large, natural and unorganised pebbled beach, approximately 450 metres long. Its clear waters, rocky areas and limited tourist development make it suitable for visitors who prefer more space and less activity than the better-known organised beaches of the northern part of the island.

📍 Location

Petalides is situated along the central northern coast of Samos, approximately 23 kilometres west–northwest of Samos Town and around 8 kilometres east–northeast of Karlovasi.

The coastal settlement of Petalides administratively belongs to the Community of Ambelos, together with Ambelos and Livadaki. It is part of the Municipal Unit of Vathy in the Municipality of East Samos.

The name Kourountere is used for the wider coastal zone along the Samos–Karlovasi main road, while Petalides is the name of both the small settlement and the beach.

🏝️ The Extensive Natural Coastline

The shore is approximately 450 metres long and does not have the same form throughout its entire length. There are wider pebbled sections, narrower areas beside the road and rocky formations that divide smaller parts of the beach.

The coastline remains largely natural, without continuous rows of umbrellas, sun loungers or other tourist facilities. Its considerable length allows visitors to choose a more open area for swimming or a smaller section near the rocks.

Trees, low vegetation and scattered homes are found in the wider area, although the beach does not have the character of a densely developed coastal resort.

🏖️ The Shore and Its Composition

The beach is mainly pebbled. Small and medium-sized pebbles, larger stones and occasional rock formations are found along the shore, particularly close to the ends and the smaller individual sections.

The seabed consists of pebbles and stones, while finer materials or sandy zones appear in certain places after entering the water.

Water shoes are particularly useful because the pebbles may be unstable and wet stones close to the water can be slippery.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The waters at Petalides are clean and transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue close to the shore to deeper blue towards the open northern Aegean Sea.

The beach is not considered particularly shallow. The depth is generally moderate, while deeper areas occur near certain rocky sections or after the first few metres.

The underwater formation is not completely uniform throughout the length of the coast. Before moving away from the shore, swimmers should check the entry point, the slope of the seabed and the presence of larger stones.

🌬️ Northern Winds and Strong Waves

The Kourountere area is directly exposed to waves from the northern sector. When strong northerly winds or the meltemi are blowing, the sea can develop significant waves and a powerful backwash across the pebbles.

The coast is so exposed that sections of the seaside main road in the area have required protection works using natural and artificial boulders.

On windless days or when the wind is light, the appearance changes and the water reveals its clarity and deep blue colour. Checking the strength and direction of the wind before every visit is essential.

⚠️ Swimming When Waves Are Present

When northern waves are strong, entering and especially leaving the water can become difficult. The waves move the pebbles and can affect swimmers’ balance.

The rocky ends and the boulders used to protect the coast should be avoided when waves are present. Wet surfaces are slippery, and the movement of the water can push a swimmer towards the rocks.

When the sea is heavily disturbed, the safest choice is not to swim.

🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling

On calm days, the excellent visibility provides pleasant conditions for swimming and relaxed exploration with a mask and snorkel.

The most interesting points are close to the natural rocky areas, where visitors may observe small fish, stones of different shapes and limited marine vegetation.

Snorkelling should take place close to the shore and only when the sea is calm. There is no confirmed organised equipment-rental service or supervision of water activities.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Suitability for Families

Petalides is not the most practical choice for families with babies or very young children. The pebbled shore, moderate or greater depth, exposure to northerly winds and absence of organised facilities require increased caution.

Families with older children who swim well can visit when the sea is calm, provided they bring water shoes, shade, drinking water and all necessary supplies.

Lifeguard coverage has not been confirmed. Children must remain under the direct and continuous supervision of an adult.

🌳 Trees and Natural Shade

Trees and low vegetation are found in the wider area behind the beach. At certain points, limited natural shade may be available near the rear of the shore.

The shade is neither continuous nor guaranteed throughout the length of the beach. It changes according to the time of day and should not be expected to cover all visitors.

Anyone planning to remain for several hours should bring a personal umbrella or another secure form of sun protection.

☀️ Organisation and Available Facilities

Petalides Beach is unorganised. Permanent facilities with umbrellas and sun loungers, a beach bar, canteen or dining establishment directly on the shore have not been confirmed.

There are no confirmed public toilets, showers, changing rooms, lifeguard service or organised water-sports centre.

Visitors should bring drinking water, food, an umbrella, sunscreen and anything else they need for their stay. All rubbish must be removed when leaving.

🚗 Road Access

The beach lies beside or very close to the Samos–Karlovasi main road and can be reached by car or motorcycle without hiking along a difficult path.

Access is possible from different points along the coastal route. Visitors should choose a location where leaving the road can be done safely, without sudden stopping or a dangerous manoeuvre.

Traffic on the main road and limited visibility around certain bends require particular care when entering or rejoining the road.

🅿️ Parking

An organised or officially prepared parking area serving the entire beach has not been confirmed.

Depending on the section of the coast, there may be limited places for temporary stopping or open space close to the road. Availability and safety are not the same in every area.

Vehicles must not be parked on the carriageway, on bends, in front of residential entrances or in places where they restrict the visibility of passing drivers.

♿ Accessibility

The short distance from the road makes it easier for elderly visitors and people who cannot walk long distances to approach the beach.

Dedicated parking spaces, a stable pathway across the pebbles, a ramp or an independent sea-access system have not been confirmed.

Wheelchair movement across the pebbled and occasionally stony surface is extremely difficult. The beach should not be listed as accessible for people with disabilities.

🌿 The Atmosphere of the Beach

Petalides has a quiet and less tourist-oriented character. The long coastline allows visitors to maintain distance from one another, particularly outside summer weekends.

The beach offers a sense of freedom and an open northern landscape, but it is not genuinely separated from the road network or inhabited areas. The main road and scattered homes are located close to the coast.

On calm days, views towards the open Aegean Sea and the sound of the water dominate the experience. When the northern wind strengthens, the coast takes on a much wilder character.

The long pebbled coastline, rocky zones, trees and open northern view create interesting locations for photography.

The changing light over the pebbles and clear water is particularly noticeable during the morning and late afternoon.

Photography near rocks, protective boulders or areas reached by waves should only take place from stable and safe ground.

Swim in one of the open pebbled sections when the sea is calm.

Explore the natural rocks close to the ends of the coast with a mask and snorkel, remaining within a short distance of the beach.

Walk along the safe sections of the shore and observe the changes between small pebbles, larger stones and rocky areas.

Enjoy the view towards the open northern Aegean and the wilder character of the northern coastline of Samos.

Choose a quiet place away from the road access points for relaxation, bringing your own shade and all necessary supplies.
