Limnionas Beach is located in southwestern Samos, at the western end of Marathokampos Bay and in front of the small seaside settlement of Limnionas. It is one of the best-known beaches in the area, combining easy access, organised facilities and a particularly beautiful natural landscape beneath the imposing slopes of Mount Kerkis.

The sheltered bay, the gentle slope of the seabed and the clear waters provide excellent conditions for swimming and relaxation. Despite the peaceful character of the area, Limnionas is not an isolated or untouched beach, as accommodation, restaurants and holiday homes can be found around the coastline.

📍 Location

Limnionas is situated on the southwestern coast of Samos, west of Kambos Marathokampou and Votsalakia. The distance from Kambos is approximately 5.5–6 kilometres, following the coastal road that passes close to Psili Ammos Marathokampou and continues towards the western end of the bay.

Its position inside the bay, beneath the southern slopes of Mount Kerkis, creates a distinctive landscape where the mountain, olive groves and sea form one of the most beautiful views in southwestern Samos.

🏝️ The Bay and Natural Landscape

The beach is formed inside an open but well-sheltered bay, surrounded by low hills, olive groves and the steep southern slopes of Mount Kerkis. The mountain dominates the landscape and creates an impressive natural backdrop behind the shore.

The coastline is not limited to a very small enclosed cove. The beach is approximately 350 metres long and has an average width of around 10 metres, offering a reasonable amount of space, although certain sections are narrow. Rocky areas and small sea inlets can be found at both ends of the beach and are suitable for exploration with a mask and snorkel.

The shore of Limnionas consists of a combination of light-coloured sand, fine gravel and small pebbles. Its composition is not uniform along the entire beach: sand dominates in certain areas, while fine pebbles are more noticeable in others.

Entry into the sea is generally smooth, without large stones in the central section. Near the ends of the bay, the seabed becomes rockier and more uneven, so water shoes may be useful for visitors planning to explore beyond the main swimming area.

🌊 The Water and Seabed

The waters are clear and transparent, with colours ranging from pale blue near the shore to deeper blue towards the outer part of the bay. The excellent visibility often allows visitors to observe the seabed even several metres away from the coast.

Contrary to older descriptions, the sea does not become deep suddenly in the central section. The seabed slopes gently and gradually, making the beach suitable for families as well. Nevertheless, the depth increases more noticeably as swimmers move towards the opening of the bay.

In certain places, the water may feel noticeably cooler. This local characteristic is associated with freshwater springs rising from the seabed and originating from the wider Mount Kerkis area.

🌬️ Wind and Waves

The bay provides good protection from strong waves, and the sea remains relatively calm on most days. The name “Limnionas” is believed to be connected with this image of a sea surface resembling a small lake.

When winds blow from the land towards the sea, the water surface may become more disturbed without necessarily producing large waves close to the shore. Although the bay is sheltered, weather conditions should always be considered, particularly when swimming farther away from the beach.

The gentle slope of the seabed, the usually calm sea and the easy access make Limnionas a suitable choice for families with children. Entry into the water is smoother in the central section, where the sea remains relatively shallow for the first few metres.

Young children require continuous supervision, as the beach has a long coastline and the water becomes deeper farther from the shore. Permanent lifeguard coverage has not been confirmed, so the presence of organised facilities should not create a false sense of complete supervision.

Limnionas is an organised beach, with umbrellas and sun loungers available in sections of the shoreline. At the same time, there are areas where visitors can place their own towels or beach umbrellas.

During the summer season, cafés, restaurants and visitor facilities operate close to the beach. Showers, toilets and changing rooms have also been reported. These are connected with the operation of the organised facilities and may not be available outside the tourist season.

The available facilities are sufficient for spending the entire day at the beach, without giving Limnionas the intense atmosphere of a large tourist resort or a busy beach club.

Restaurants and cafés operate within the seaside settlement and along the coastline, offering food, soft drinks and coffee without requiring visitors to return to Kambos Marathokampou.

The presence of restaurants and cafés is an important characteristic of the area and distinguishes Limnionas from the genuinely isolated beaches of western Samos. For this reason, the “Restaurants” amenity should be activated in Drupal.

🤿 Swimming and Snorkelling

The clarity of the water and the relatively calm sea provide excellent conditions for comfortable swimming. The length of the beach allows swimmers to follow longer routes parallel to the coast without moving too far towards the open sea.

The rocky ends of the bay are more interesting for exploration with a mask and snorkel, as the seabed becomes more varied and supports more marine life. Care is required around slippery stones, small boats and changing wind conditions.

🚗 Access

Access is possible by car or motorcycle via a paved road continuing west from Kambos Marathokampou and Votsalakia. The route passes through the southwestern landscape of the island and ends at the seaside settlement of Limnionas.

The road reaches close to the beach, and no hiking or descent along a difficult path is required. Certain sections are narrow and winding, so careful driving is necessary, particularly during periods of increased traffic in the peak season.

Free parking is available close to the shore and the nearby restaurants. During July and August, the closest spaces may fill up, although the area offers more parking options than a small isolated cove.

Vehicle access and the relatively level layout near the central section make the beach easier to approach for people with limited mobility. Local sources describe the beach as accessible, although the presence of an independent sea-access system such as SEATRAC has not been documented.

🌞 The Atmosphere of the Beach

Limnionas maintains a calm and family-friendly character despite the presence of organised facilities. The small settlement, low-rise buildings, olive trees and imposing Mount Kerkis create a more relaxed atmosphere than that found in larger tourist centres.

During the peak season, the beach may attract a considerable number of visitors, but the length of the shoreline helps distribute the crowds. It should not be described as a completely isolated beach or as a destination without tourist development.

Swim parallel to the beach, taking advantage of the usually calm surface of the bay.

Observe the contrast between the turquoise waters, the olive groves and the steep slopes of Mount Kerkis.

Visit during the morning if you prefer a quieter atmosphere and easier parking.

Bring water shoes, particularly if you plan to explore the rocky ends of the beach.

Do not assume that a lifeguard will be present, and supervise children continuously.

The organised facilities mainly operate during the summer season, so outside the main tourist period it is advisable to bring drinking water and basic supplies.

Avoid swimming far towards the open sea when winds are blowing from the land.

Wild camping is not an organised or legal facility of the beach and should not be presented as a recommended activity.
