Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary – Marathokampos, Samos
⛪ Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary – Marathokampos, Samos
The Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is located on the outskirts of Marathokampos in western Samos and is a small historic female monastery with a distinctive place in the religious tradition of the area.
The monastery was officially founded in 1887, although the history of the site is considerably older. The church of the Virgin Mary already existed in the 18th century, while the development of monastic life in the area became closely associated during the 19th century with the presence of the Kollyvades Fathers in Marathokampos.
📍 Location
The monastery is situated on the outskirts of Marathokampos, in a peaceful location close to the historic village.
The wider area at the foot of Mount Kerkis has a strong religious tradition, with old churches, chapels, cave sanctuaries and monastic sites associated with different periods of the history of Samos.
📜 The Earlier Church
The ecclesiastical presence at the site predates the official foundation of the monastery in 1887 by many decades.
An inscription preserved in the church bears the date 1769, indicating the existence of an organised place of worship here by the 18th century.
Above the entrance is another date, 15 June 1819, associated with an important renovation of the church.
The present monastery therefore continues the history of a religious site that had already existed for more than a century before its official establishment as a female monastery.
🕯️ The Kollyvades in Marathokampos
During the first decades of the 19th century, Kollyvades monks who had left Mount Athos following the ecclesiastical disputes of their time also settled in the Marathokampos area.
Their spiritual activity, preaching and way of life had a significant influence on the religious life of the local community.
Their presence forms a distinctive chapter in the monastic history of western Samos.
👩 The Formation of the Female Monastic Community
The spiritual movement that developed in the area attracted women who wished to follow the monastic life.
Some of them settled around the existing religious site and the old church of the Virgin Mary, gradually forming an organised nucleus of female monastic life.
This development eventually led to the official establishment of the Dormition Monastery as a female monastery in 1887.
⛪ The Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary
The main church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Most Holy Virgin Mary.
It is a small church that preserves the modest and intimate character of the monastic complex and forms the historic nucleus around which the monastery developed.
Its old inscriptions from the 18th and 19th centuries are particularly important, recording different phases in the history of the site.
❤️ Charitable Role
The history of the complex was not limited exclusively to monastic life.
Before its final organisation as a female monastery, some of its buildings were also used for charitable purposes.
For a period, the site served as a place for the care of elderly people and as a charitable institution.
This use reflects the close relationship that religious institutions on Samos traditionally maintained with the social life and needs of local communities.
🏛️ The Monastic Complex
The Dormition Monastery is a small and modest monastic complex.
Unlike the large historic monasteries of central and eastern Samos, it does not have the strongly fortified or monumental character of larger monastic establishments.
Its small scale, church and cells create a more intimate and peaceful environment for monastic life.
🏗️ Restoration and Preservation
In more recent times, works were carried out to maintain and restore the monastery buildings.
A significant organised restoration effort began in 1996, with support from residents and local organisations in Marathokampos.
These works contributed to the preservation of the historic monastic site and to the continuation of its religious function.
🙏 The Memory of the Kollyvades Fathers
The connection between the monastery and the Kollyvades tradition remains present in its contemporary religious life.
Services are held in memory of the Kollyvades Fathers, preserving the link between the present-day monastery and this distinctive chapter of Orthodox spiritual history.
🙏 The Feast of the Dormition
The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, celebrated on 15 August.
The Dormition is one of the most important feasts dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the Orthodox Church and holds a particularly important place in the religious traditions of Samos.
🕯️ Active Female Monastery
The Dormition Monastery remains an active female monastery today.
Its monastic and liturgical life keeps alive a religious site whose history reaches back well before the official foundation of 1887 and connects different periods of the spiritual life of Marathokampos.
🚗 Access
The monastery is located close to Marathokampos and is accessible by road.
No mountain hiking is required, and a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the traditional village and visits to other religious and historic sites in western Samos.
🕰️ Visiting
As this is an active female monastery, visiting is best arranged in advance, particularly for visitors wishing to access the interior areas of the monastic complex.
Visitors are expected to observe appropriate dress, quiet behaviour and respect for monastic life.
⭐ Why Visit the Dormition Monastery?
The monastery of Marathokampos stands out not for its size but for its long and distinctive history.
The church with elements dating to 1769, the renovation of 1819, the Kollyvades tradition, the formation of the female monastic community and the official foundation of the monastery in 1887 create a historical continuity spanning more than two centuries.
Its earlier charitable role and its continuing monastic life also reveal a small but important religious site closely connected with the spiritual and social history of Marathokampos.
